What happens now?
This submission is currently in a pre-review state which means we are waiting for an editor to be assigned and for them to find some reviewers for your submission. This may take anything between a few hours to a couple of weeks. Thanks for your patience :smile_cat:
You can help the editor by looking at this list of potential reviewers to identify individuals who might be able to review your submission (please start at the bottom of the list). Also, feel free to suggest individuals who are not on this list by mentioning their GitHub handles here.

Message from the submitting author:
Our paper details our recent R package, which detects fraud in online surveys by tracing, scoring, and visualizing IP addresses, after cleaning IP data. In our previous submission, @arfon (rightly) noted the package was in the "minor utility" category. As a response, we have worked to significantly expand the package functionality as well as including a variety of cleaning and plotting tools, all with the goal of making survey research more efficient and reproducible. Our package is very important for practical research that uses online surveys, from marketing to political science, and many other fields. Thank you for considering.
Hi - many thanks for considering our paper! We recommend either @RMHogervorst or @alexhanna as reviewers, though we are certainly open to your thoughts on it as well. Many thanks again and let us know whatever else you need in the process.
π @jasonclark, @cMadan, @arokem - would one of you be willing to edit this submission?
@danielskatz I don't use R, sorry!
π @jasonclark, @arokem - would one of you be willing to edit this submission?
π @jasonclark, @arokem - ping... would one of you be willing to edit this submission?
Hi @danielskatz - I have some suggested reviewers if these don't work out. Let me know if you would like to invite someone else to take a look. Happy to help how I can.
Please suggest reviewers here - and I'll keep trying to get an editor lined up. Having suggestions will help the editor.
Awesome - this is copied and pasted from my note above: We recommend either @RMHogervorst or @alexhanna as reviewers, though we are certainly open to your thoughts on it as well. Many thanks again and let us know whatever else you need in the process.
@yochannah would you be able to edit this?
Happy to!
@whedon assign @yochannah as editor
OK, the editor is @yochannah
Hey @pdwaggoner! Before we progress to the review stage, JOSS requires that all repos have an OSI-approved license. Any of the licenses here should be fine: https://opensource.org/licenses
If this is okay with you, let me know when you've updated the license in your GitHub repo so we can proceed π
Many thanks for editing @yochannah ! The license file should be in the repo and up to date, as LICENSE. Let me know if you arenβt seeing it. Iβll do whatever is needed. Thanks again!
Thanks @pdwaggoner - when I visit https://github.com/MAHDLab/rIP/blob/master/LICENSE I do see a license file, but it looks like it's just a couple of lines of copyright statement - this is not technically enough to allow legal re-use of the software. OSI licenses have specific wording that explicitly allow re-use of the software, which is why we require them for JOSS.
A couple of resources that could help you choose which is right for you might be https://choosealicense.com/ and/or https://tldrlegal.com/. Personally, I'm a fan of MIT or Apache 2 licenses - they allow re-use relatively freely such that it can be re-used in either open source software or proprietary software, as opposed to a license like the GPL which only allows re-use by other open source software.
Many thanks @yochannah - that makes good sense. I updated the license. Let me know if this is sufficient to move forward. The old version was our license file for our CRAN submission. Should be good now. Thanks!
@pdwaggoner Yep, that looks perfect. Thanks!
So hey there @RMHogervorst or @alexhanna π Can we interest either or both of you in reviewing this software paper? Thanks!!
I can if necessary but will defer to @RMHogervorst, as R is not my primary
language.

Hi @yochannah - thanks again for editing this! I just wanted to check in and see if you would like me to recommend any other reviewers? Happy to help how I can. Thanks again!
Hey @pdwaggoner! :) I will _never_ say no to such a generous offer - if you have suggestions, please go ahead! π
Awesome @yochannah . A couple other folks could be @benmarwick or @mbod if they are willing. Let me know if you need anything else in the process!
Any luck on finding reviewers @yochannah ? Let me know if I can help at all! Thanks so much again.
We haven't had much luck on the GitHub mentions with this one, have we? I've sent a call out on twitter - let's give it a couple of days. If that doesn't come through I'll try emailing some more possibles directly. Thanks for your patience with this! π
If there's no luck on Twitter I can take it on.

Sounds good - @yochannah . Thanks for taking that extra step; we really appreciate the added effort there. And Thanks as well @alexhanna ! Honestly, I don't think it will be too much of a taxing review, as the software is pretty straightforward, even if R is not your primary language. However, you both would like to proceed, we are more than happy to go along with it. Thanks again for the help! Excited to move forward on this.
For sure. Let me know what the next steps are.
