Jetpack: Tiled Gallery & Slideshow blocks: Custom link URL on images

We don't have yet a block solution that is equivalent to a featured content slider. We've heard from HEs that it's a popular feature for our customers, and they often wish to link each image in a slideshow to a page or a post.

Newspack is working on a Carousel block that allows you to link to post, but it's limited to post, and a custom link URL option like Image block could be a good interim solution.

A custom link URL option for a gallery, in general, is a popular request, and it's worth to consider.

That's not on our roadmap right now, but adding that custom link URL to the existing slideshow block would certainly bring us very close to a Featured Content Block!

jeherve, please consider this functionality. I switched from a gallery plugin which didn't function to well to Jetpack. It works perfectly, but the problem is I need a Tiled Gallery page in which I can click on any image and it would then send me to a url per image (which would be a page with Jetpack carousel).

If you can just add ability to link URL to each image in a gallery it would be perfect.

Currently exploring a refactor of the Gallery block to be a wrapper around Image blocks - https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/pull/25940 - it would be great if we could then have variations of the core gallery that displayed as slidehow, etc. ... this way we don't have to replicate core Image block functionality like custom links across all the different gallery blocks we have at the moment.

This likely is too complex but passing "layout algorithms" as style options to the core gallery block could also open exciting possibilities.

I did get a very rough prototype working of a style wrapper around the core gallery for tiled layout just using css grid - https://github.com/Automattic/jetpack/pull/16476 - but there are some complexities around making this full working with multiple column options
