Jellyfin: Jellyfin Server Software coming to NAS package centers (like Synology's)

Created on 28 Dec 2018  Â·  47Comments  Â·  Source: jellyfin/jellyfin

It would make it easier for the general user to get Jellyfin if it was in Synology's Package Centre (for example). It doesn't need to be added now but it would be something useful for the future.

The Hardware Acceleration is still a bit of a work in progress no matter what platform you're using, but the request has been noted!

Thanks for using Jellyfin

We definitely need Synology builds! I stopped using Emby today after experiencing a lot of problems with version 4.0 and started using the Docker version of Jellyfin and everything works smoothly with the exception of hardware transcoding. I guess hardware transcoding should work with native builds. And of corse, if more builds for more platforms are available, more people will jump to Jellyfin from Emby and Plex.

Oh yes please, provide us a spk !!!

As I can't achieve the Docker installation, I hope a SPK is coming soon ^^

Would love to see a Synology build. The docker container runs very poorly on my Synology.

I'm very interested in a Synology package in the future, using docker container for the moment but I can't get steady hardware acceleration, it seems to start for some minutes then hangs (can see a -vaapi process with htop command). I also have extremely poor network performance in default bridge network mode, but a lot better in host mode.

i like to see a synology package the docker version have some things i do not like

Hello,
Synology Support... please :)

A Synology package would be amazing! I would love to test it out one day on a ds414.

After 10.3.2 lands, I can start looking into this. I don't know that any of the core or support teams have any Synology hardware, so we would need someone to test.

I have applied here for more details: https://www.synology.com/en-global/support/developer

I am also looking at https://synocommunity.com/

My englisch isn‘t very well. I can testing the Programm in my DS418play

Modellname DS418play
Prozessor INTEL Celeron J3355
Prozessor-Taktrate 2 GHz
Prozessorkerne 2
Arbeitsspeicher insgesamt 10 GB
DSM-Version DSM 6.2.1-23824 Update 6
Systemzeit 2019-04-25 20:53:24
Laufzeit 11 Tag(e) 9 Stunde(n) 11 Minute(n) 17 Sekunde(n)

I did not expect such a fast response thank you very much. Maybe you could test it for yourself on an Xpenology system? (https://xpenology.org/).

The synocommunity is a great way to spread the program to other Synology owners. I can only recommend it.

One last thing:
:!:DO NOT UPDATE DSM BEYOND VERSION 6.1.7 with loader v1.02b.
IN OTHER WORDS DO NOT UPDATE TO DSM 6.2:!:
You have been warned.

My Version is 6.2.1. Sorry. The Program Looks like a jailbreak for NAS. I think this will broken my Garantie.

I'll be willing to test. I have a DS218+ and I used VideoStation primarily for media (for now) anyway.

I am also available for testing. DS418J ( rtd1296 arch)

Available to test on DS216j

OK for testing on an old DS713+ (with a DX513)

will be happy to test it too on my xpenology DS918+ if it can be installed together with emby, which I suppose is not a good idea, but I'm still using it for its reliable hardware transcoding.
With Jellyfin 10.3.1 installed on synology with docker, vaapi transcoding is not consistent, even if it seems to work better than previous versions, especially with HEVC.

I do not want to use the program for transcoding, since I have a 4K TV and therefore do not need it. My main concern is the skins and other addons.

ok for testing on a xpenology 3615ds

i can also test on DS218+

Willing to test on a DS918+

i can also test on DS3615xs.

if/when i get my new DS918+ running, i would also be available for testing

Can test DS415+

Thanks all, we need to work on some more packaging enhancements now that we're stable (kind of) on 10.3.2. I'll advise when we have something to go on.

Can you keep us updated when there will be a SPK File for Synology?
Also: do you still need testers? Have a DS1817+ (DSM 6.2.2)

What should I install?

Is it possible to stream from the Cloud? Like streaming from GDrive?

I can test on DS916+ and DS216play (DSM 6.2.2),thank you!

I have a DS918+ happy to help with testing builds. Cheers!

My DS214play is ready for tests

Just want to comment for Syno DS918+ users (J3455 CPU with Quick Sync), that I seem to have HW Accelerated transcoding working within the standard Jellyfin docker image (version 10.3.7.0) on the DS918+. I was able to accomplish this by running it in privileged mode (not everyone will be comfortable with this), which exposes the host's /dev directory, including the required renderD128 device in /dev/dri/. With that, you can select the "Video Acceleration API" option in Jellyfin's transcode settings page and also select the renderD128 device. I'm not sure if this is important, but I also chmod'd 777 on /dev/dri/renderD128, and installed the vainfo package along the way. Note: you may also need to turn off subtitles in the player, which may have known limitations with Quick Sync and/or FFMPEG.

So far I've tested this with a couple of movies:
*H264 1080p movie, transcoding from 8mps down to 5mbps.
*HVEC Main 10 movie, transcoding from 64Mbps down to 5mbps (H264)

Without H/W transcoding, the first movie's software transcoding would bring my Syno CPU to about 98% sustained. The second movie would be unplayable (unless Direct Play'd).

With the above changes, the CPU runs under 25% in both cases. I believe it would be lower if I wasn't also transcoding audio (my hardware doesn't support DTS, so it transcodes DTS audio to MP3).

This is the only testing I've performed, so I can't tell you if it will stand the test of time across all content and configs.

Hope this helps!

please provide a spk for Synology x64 (DS918+)

More than happy to tryout a Synology build for my DS1813+.

Could test on DS218+.

I could test on DS918+

If there's any room for porting to Netgear's ReadyNAS OS, that would be awesome! I'd be happy to help however I can (trying to find information about building apps for their Debian builds, now.)

I was able to accomplish it on my DS918+ using the linuserver.io image, it _did not_ require running in privileged mode, and _did not_ require the vainfo package. I mounted the /dev/dri/renderD128 device like the docs say (almost, they don't specify the renderD128 part but you need it), but it _did require_ running sudo chmod 777 /dev/dri/renderD128 to get HW trancoding actually working. Like you I saw CPU usage drop from 98% to 25% for a single 1080p stream.

Thanks for tips, hopefully it's a few less steps and a little more secure for other people finding this ticket!

I can test on a DS1618+ if needed :)

i could donate an arm based real synology for testing or a i386/amd64 whitebox xpenology machine running 6.2

Hi all,
It's not really "spam", but GitHub doesn't have any good options for this.

We understand you'd like it to come to Synology and other NAS package centers. Hardware isn't the issue, as many people have volunteered, and even offered hardware. To those who have, _thank you_.

The main issue now is getting someone with enough experience and time to help make this a reality. To that end, there isn't anyone currently on the core/packaging teams that knows how to do this. If anyone has any good resources, or is willing to do this, please reach out to us (see Getting Help). We can help provide guidance, but we need help to get started first.

Thanks,
Anthony

I think many will want to test it first and because of the ports, you can't just install Jelly because Synology says the port is already in use. Maybe someone can create a manual for it, since you don't want to uninstall Emby on the off-chance that the database is gone.

Thanks.

You install it after you have stopped Emby. You can have both installed but only one running at a time. So you can keep your Database.

No this does Not work. I Must deinstall Emby and then i am able to install jelly, but i cant activate Transcoding and without using Addons it is Bad. This Try was Bad for ne, because Emby Slack does Not work and My database was left.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen

David Dieter
