Ios: iOS APP freezes for 1min at the start after adding all my images

Created on 16 Jan 2019  Â·  13Comments  Â·  Source: nextcloud/ios

Expected behaviour

Open the iOS app and use it after a short loading time.

Actual behaviour

After opening the app, it is completely unresponsive for ~1min and the network-symbol is showing up in the top of the screen. After this time, I can use it as usually. This started exactly after i added all my images (~15gb ... many image-files) to my server. (via Web-interface from external disks, and via the iOS app from my old iPhone5). Accessing my server via webinterface or webDav client works perfectly without any delay, so the problem should be within the iOS app.

Steps to reproduce

open iOS Nextcloud app

iOS version

12.1.2 (was the same with 12.1.1)

App version

Nextcloud for iOS 2.22.7.4

Server configuration

Nextcloud server 14.04

Operating system:
ubuntu 16.04

Web server:
nginx/1.15.6

Database:
mariadb 10.2.19

PHP version:
PHP 7.0.32-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 (cli) ( NTS )

Nextcloud version: (see Nextcloud admin page)
14.04

How do you recover from the app freezing? Does a simple swipe up on the ios task changer suffice?
Are you still able to browse your nextcloud through the "files" app of ios?
Can you still upload pictures through the share menu of ios?

When I open the app, after a few seconds it freezes and is unresponsive for ~1 min, I just wait and after this time it works as usual.

When i swipe it in the task changer and close it, I have to wait again for this freeze-time. It seems like the app is checking something at startup, and since I added a huge amount of images (in the "Photo" folder, that I also you for automatic synch. with my phone) recently, this takes very long.

When the app is freezing I can still access everything instantly via webinterface or webDav client.

When the app is freezed and I try to upload a pic via share menu of iOS the app crashes. The file was uploaded, but the app kept on crashing until i rebooted my phone. Now everything is again as mentioned above: After freeze-time I can use the app.

Same problem here. In my case, with almost 200Gb of photos, the app becomes unresponsive for a very long time when I open it and most of the times it crashes before I can do anything

So at the moment I am under the impression that it has something to do with the Preview Image Creation.
I would suggest you try to pre create all preview images with:
occ preview:generate-all
See: https://github.com/rullzer/previewgenerator

Because now that I have uploaded a lot of new photos and the previews were created the ios app does not crash anymore, the gallery still is buggy (displays the same photo multiple times sometimes), but still is more or less usable

So I highly recommend pre generating the previews....

Same issue here. 10gb photo folder, long delay any time the app is opened, e.g. after a phone lock and reopen. Has anyone tried the occ fix yet? Did it work?

I have the same issue. Seems to be related to large photo collections because only my user account is affected -- my wife has very few photos and her account works fine.

I've tried the solution offered by @AndrewwHummer in https://github.com/nextcloud/ios/issues/769#issuecomment-458843508 but it didn't work for me.

Edit: I'm running Nextcloud v15.0.2

Unfortunately I can’t run occ commands as I am using a shared hosting provider and don’t have shell access.

Hi everyone, soon a new view for media tab. Work in progress.

This has been fixed for me after installing 2.23.0. The media tab is not showing anything, but at least the app is usable now :)

Same behavior for me as @jcreixell after installing 2.23.0. The app is now usable and the media tab has no content.

I do see some media now, but only from the phone uploads folder, not my giant library. I see that is possible to change the media folder, I will try that and see what happens

For this issue please ref. #796
