Instapy: Branding and identity development

To make InstaPy better known, we need to build a brand. We are currently using the name InstaPy and the logo, which is very similar to Instagram.

First, I'd like to introduce myself. Currently I am doing my Bachelor of Science in Online Marketing and plan to write a scientific paper about InstaPy.
I will support the marketing team in building a brand for InstaPy. If you have any questions regarding marketing or communications or want to help me build the InstaPy brand, please feel free to contact me.

Brand name

Since the name InstaPy is already known for the technical core, we want to keep the name for the repository and all technical factors. Future projects, which also require more intensive marketing, should run under a new name. We expect to gain the advantage of no longer being legally vulnerable to Instagram, being able to better promote InstaPy's products and projects with this new name, and being more adaptable to new projects that may play outside of Instagram.

This name should fulfill the following aspects:

  • It should not be used by any other company or project.
  • it should not be registered or licensed
  • it should no longer be directly associated with Instagram
  • it should be short and memorable
  • the .com, .io and .de domain should be available
  • the username should be available on the following platforms: Instagram, Twitter, Facebook (page)
  • it should emphasize the positive aspects of InstaPy and at best do without words like bot(s) or boosting

Of course, it can also be fictitious and have no connection with the technology. Nevertheless, it is important that the name is perceived positively and remains usable for our projects in the long term.

Brand logo

In addition to the new name, we are also looking for a new logo. If you are talented in Photoshop or have a cool idea, you are welcome to submit it.

It is important to note the following:

  • the shapes and colors should not be based on instagrams
  • all elements of the logo must come from you
  • it should match the name
  • it should be clear and memorable
  • it should also remain recognizable as a small picture or pictogram

But not only the creators can participate: we want the whole InstaPy community to decide about the new name. So give thumbs up or thumbs down for concepts you really like or dislike!

When submitting a proposal, you assure us that no third party is entitled to the rights of the name or logo. You also surrender all rights and claims by submitting a proposal.

Since we want to start with the new branding as early as possible, we would be happy if you share this message with your friends.

Thank you for your commitment.
Best regards,
Luca

so basically a new name that's not related to Instagram and a logo?

i decided to combine some names here and came up with the following

Pytomate (Python + Automate)
Automann (Automate + timgrossmann)
Pythgram (Python + Instagram)

i think a logo is designed after the name has been settled on.

When you say

We expect to gain the advantage of no longer being legally vulnerable to Instagram

I'm curious what you mean. Are you implying that the letters Insta in InstaPy are make InstaPy legally vulnerable to Instagram? I'd think it's the rather blatant violation of their terms of service that is the worry, not the name.

I work at an agency that does these kind of branding projects and I will say that what you're asking for is no small feat. Of course, neither is creating InstaPy. Logos aren't created in Photoshop and branding isn't done by a community (usually). This is often the kind of thing that a small team does, and it's rather expensive.

I'm all down for reaching out to the open source community. Branding isn't like programming, though.

Hi @axlright, thanks for reaching out. You are absolutely right that the legal risk of violating the Instagram Terms of Use continues to exist. However, we feel it is important to differentiate ourselves from Instagram by both name and logo in order not to be less vulnerable to Instagram.

Of course, I am aware that logos are not created in Photoshop. This request is not about finding a final logo than about gathering inspiration from the community. Therefore we don't expect any final, vectorized logos, but want to give the community the opportunity to participate in the decision process about the appearance of InstaPy.

We will follow up with a small team of active developers and supporters of the project to decide which name and which logo is most suitable and how we can implement a clear branding for InstaPy.

Since InstaPy is an open source project, there are no financial resources to pay for professional branding. However, creative minds from the community and we will do our best to create a great design concept for InstaPy. We will be happy to see your proposal! :-)

@lucanello totally agree! I applaud the work you're doing. I saw mention of the #marketing channel on Slack. Big thumbs up 馃憤 馃挴
