Expected behavior:
At the moment, while IINA is able to set preferred languages, it is not possible to pull from multiple databases at the same time. In order to search other database (currently only opensubtitles and shooter.cn are available), one has to manually switch the source of the subtitle in the settings.
Since no single database is complete enough for all languages, it makes sense to include multiple databases when searching for subtitles. For example, most subtitles on shooter.cn is in Chinese, it will be futile to search for English subtitles on it.
It will be nice to pull from different sources at the same time and only filter it down to preferred languages afterwards. This could go well with feature request #680 .
With this implemented, the menu in the setting will be like the following:
Which sources would you like to pull subtitle from (multiple choice)
Preferred Language (text input as it is now):
chi jpn
Before using IINA, I used command line utility subliminal to fetch subtitles — it takes videofile and preferred languages as input and automatically downloads most suitable subtitles. It uses many sources simultaneously and it never failed for me. You can try it with your videos, and if you find it satisfactory, please upvote #688 — I suggest building it right into IINA.
Shooter.cn no longer provide subtitles
