Hyper: WebGL2 not supported

  • [x] I am on the latest release (canary)
  • [x] I have searched the issues of this repo and believe that this is not a duplicate
  • OS version and name: Ubuntu 16.04
  • Hyper.app version: Hyper 3.0.0-canary.5
  • Link of a Gist with the contents of your .hyper.js: no need, reproducible in vanilla
  • Relevant information from devtools _(CMD+ALT+I on macOS, CTRL+SHIFT+I elsewhere)_: screenshot below
  • The issue is reproducible in vanilla Hyper.app: yes

Issue

Hi, unfortunately the latest canary version makes hyper unusable.. I think the screenshots describe the issue...

There is no cursor nor input on the terminal, I tried Ctrl+D and it did nothing:

Ctrl+Shift+I worked, it shows this:

The last error about dimensions might have something to do with my window manager that always makes Hyper start at maximized-size but not really maximized.

This started happening when I installed canary.5. Let me know if you need more info!

You can disable the new WebGL renderer. Please add: webGLRenderer: false in your config section of .hyper.js file.

@onecamp We maybe have to try/catch Term creation and automatically fallback to canvas if an exception occurs?

I had the old config and didn't realise that there was a new option for this. Thanks!

I agree with the fallback to canvas :)
Feel free to close the issue (or leave it open to implement the fallback..)

Interesting, I didn't realize that webgl2 support could depend on anything other than chromium version. But I guess drivers and hardware could make a difference. @chalkos, just out of curiosity, do you mind sharing what hardware you're on? Might give us an idea on how widespread this problem could be.

The fallback sounds like a good idea. I'll do that

It is an ubuntu 16.04 with an integrated intel gpu.

http://webglreport.com/ says that I have WebGL 1 support, but about webgl 2...

This browser supports WebGL 2, but it is disabled or unavailable.

Sometimes this is the result of older video drivers being rejected by the browser. Try updating your video drivers if possible.

I updated the video drivers but it did not change the outcome

Interesting, I didn't realize that webgl2 support could depend on anything other than chromium version.

This was also my assumption, this is very good to know. We'll probably both need fallbacks when this exception occurs to switch the renderer.

Can be related to #2895

Well you're forcing Chromium to not disable GPU based on the hardware with that, I guess certain hardware can still be incompatible.

I'm hitting this error still. Hyper 3.0.2 on MacOS. Is anyone else still seeing this issue?
