Wouldn't it be awesome that Hugo — by using the latest technologies — natively outputs a progressive web app / single page application enjoying all their benefits (offline, instant navigation preload/prefetch, etc.) and thus be ready for the future of web without relying on external dependencies?
Wouldn't it be too difficult to implement, and above all would it accommodate Hugo's philosophy?
The short answer is a loud "yes".
I created #5894 to track a Proof of Concept that would include at least the evaluation part of what you talk about. One of the goals of that PoC would be do to this without doing "too many" modifications to Hugo itself, e.g. by using the concepts of Output Formats etc. #5894 is certainly fairly high up on my list (others may get there before me), but I get easily sidetracked ... Let us keep this discussion in #5894.
