Why was this closed as a duplicate?
Issue #581 is about decoding animated gifs which should be possible with current libavformat and libavcodec, this ticket is about encoding gifs: In principle, this is also possible with updated libraries but pal8 input has to be provided to the gif encoder: libswscale does an ugly conversion, the palettegen and paletteuse filters are needed to create nice gifs needing two passes.

Updated to rejected. Sorry mis-read.

We don't intend to add gif creation support. Sorry.
