I like to see a ability to disable/remove that nasty tab key when my phone is in portrait mode.
Because when i typing something i thent to hit that button with (sometimes) nasty consuquences
seconded!
The tab key is a major annoyance when using the gmail app for example

Is the TAB button that small "right pointing arrow" key that is directly to the right of the spacebar?? That key is awful and makes typing an email impossible.
I would like to outright remove or hide this key. Is this possible???
I would like this too. Too many times I'm trying to type something in a browser textbox/area accidentally tap on it on which it switches to a link and my next keystroke opens the link. Then my whole input field is gone and I have to start all over. Been trying to get used to the position but I just can't get used to it.
Sidenote: After some research I found that it's easy enough to do this yourself if you can compile Android apps. When I have some time I'll be forking this project to remove the tab key completely from portrait mode for myself. If you want you can compile that source. I won't pull request it because it will just remove the tab key not give an option to disable it.
I find that I hit this tab key just about every time I try to hit spacebar. Using the gmail app is maddening since the next tab is the To: field. When this key is absent from the layout the keyboard is fantastic.
Just curious: if y'all don't want PC-keyboard-type layout, why do y'all use HK, instead of, e.g., GBoard?
Duplicates #55, #553, #629, & perhaps others I missed.
Everything is perfect in landscape mode. This small change to the portrait 4-row layout where the spacebar is being reduced in size in favour for functions that move you away from what you're doing. Tab isn't next to the spacebar in the standard PC layout either.
Apps with single fields to write in do not have this issue. I'd prefer not to be switching keyboards between tasks
Y'all mean the compact 5-row or 4-row layouts, right? Wouldn't keeping to the full 5-row layout in portrait mode solve this w/o the drastic step of removing TAB & recompiling? There's a setting to do that easily (for years!).

Adding my 2 cents here, as this issue seems not to be taken seriously by contributors in the issue posts linked above as well as this one. If I knew Java I'd do it myself but I don't (more like JavaScript). When I first started using this app it did not have this behavior, 5ish years ago. The tab key issue where it either shortens the spacebar or swaps with the period key (particularly in Gmail) has been driving me nuts the last years to the extent that I stopped writing emails in the Gmail app on my phone because all it takes is one press of that phantom tab key at the wrong time and it causes a ton of issues with the message I'm writing. Both the key placement and the implementation of when it appears seems to follow no logical use case. Surely, writing a setting to disable the tab key next to the spacebar in the 4-row layout is trivial for someone who already is familiar with the code base, no?
Thanks for reading.
I'll do it if the maintainers agree to support the change.
