Habitica: Avatar Customization Localization Strings

Created on 1 Aug 2016  Â·  42Comments  Â·  Source: HabitRPG/habitica

Most of the options in the "Customize Avatar" section do not have localized strings available. As I am planning on adding strings for them to the member modal in #7768, Edit: Due to the major task this entails, this will be added in a separate PR. I thought that it would be a good idea to add the strings as labels on the "Customize Avatar" page. @SabreCat @Alys @lemoness @crookedneighbor @GitHubSphinx

This is a lot to go through, which I will need to do later. I just wanted to note two quick things:

  1. We absolutely should not use food as descriptors for skin colors, as it is considered offensive by quite a few people. I prefer the numbering system for skin tones for simplicity.
  2. The wiki wizards have already developed names for a lot of the customization features. We should try to be consistent with those. @Alys can possibly shed some light?
  3. I'm not convinced that we need descriptions for the avatar customization options like skin and hairstyle.

For the basic Skins I recommend to use a numbering approach to avoid racial profiling

Good idea!

haven't looked through all the items yet

Hmm "Skin #2" would look strange to me... I'd just call a basic skin a Basic Skin  I mean having one name and description for all the basic skins.

@GitHubSphinx @MeTspin The Hex values could also be used

"convict shirt" sounds funny, but
a] those were horizontally striped instead of vertically, and
b) some people might have issues with it. (They might want to use it for roleplaying something else than a convict, and might feel that the "convict" label has too many negative connotations and might affect their self-esteem negatively - especially in connection with trying to overcome negative habits, as in _"I'm always going to be a prisoner of that habit!"_.)

My alternative suggestion would just be "striped shirt" - or, if a lot of new striped shirts are to be expected in the future, it could be a "black and white vertically striped shirt".

(Linguists please correct me - should the colors or the direction come first, is it "vertically" or "vertical" here, and is it "black and white" or "black-and-white"? English isn't my first language, and I tried to google it, but the grammar and spelling of fashion sites can't always be trusted either.) Optionally, you could leave out either the color or the direction of the stripes.

Basic Skins:

Would there be any issues of political correctness if the basic skins were just named by color (like you would name them if they were colors of clothing or wall paints)? (I'm not from the US, so I might lack insight into some negative connotations here.)

  • For the three darkest skins, the names that come to my mind first would be just "light brown", "medium brown", and "dark brown". Alternatively, we could play around with more "colorful" terms like "ebony" (dark brown), "chocolate" (medium brown), "mocha" (probably the light brown one?), and many many many!!! others. (For example there's this page with 458 synonyms for "brown". Go play with it!)
  • The pink one could be "light pink", "pinkish", or "rosy". (I'd avoid both "white" and "pink" because, speaking in terms of colors, it's definitely not white, and "pink" is usually associated with a darker tone of pink. I'd also avoid "fair" - sounds like the other colors are "unfair", plus is also a blonde hair color.) I'm sure there are more words to describe that color?
  • The one between pink and brown could be "bronze" (or would bronze be darker?) or maybe "tawny"? (I'd avoid "tanned" and "bronzed" because that implies that you got the color by sunbathing - the term shouldn't give any clue whether you got the pigmentation by sunbathing, birth, cosmetics, magic, .... I'd also avoid "fawn" or other animal names because that sounds more like one of the animal skins. I also think it's not red enough for "ruddy".)
  • The first one could simply be "beige", maybe? (Looks a bit greyish, but that sounds so unhealthy.)

Generally, I'd recommend surfing thesauri and cosmetics pages and looking at which names they use there. (They face the same problem, they want to speak about skin tones with precision while avoiding any terms of ethnicity.) I've looked around a bit, and it tends to make me hungry. :) Chocolate, various types of coffee, caramel, cinnamon, peach, hazelnut, etc., etc.

Maybe a good approach would be first picking words we like, and then looking whether we have skins that correspond to it? (I like "caramel" and "cinnamon" and "bronze" and "mocha"- I'm just not quite sure which would be which!)

Rainbow Skins:

  • What's called a "pink color" in the first post is all kinds of things but (afaik) definitely not pink. The classic colors of the rainbow are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet - but that doesn't work here because a) it's definitely not indigo either, and violet would be what's now called "purple skin" in the first post, and b) we already have green in the basic skins anyway, so we can't stick to that rainbow color scheme anyway. I'd like to suggest "lavender" or "mauve" or one of its many synonyms.
  • Also, for what's called "teal skin" in the first post, I can't make up my mind whether I like "teal" or "turquoise" better. (I think teal would be darker?) I might be affected by being a native German speaker here, it's called "türkis" (turquoise) there, whereas "teal" is something many people have to look up first.

Supernatural Skins (Suggested Descriptions):

(Please add "Confers no benefit." to each of the following!)

  • For the ogre skin: "Fee-fi-fo-fum!" (Debatable because the character in "Jack and the Beanstalk" is usually called a giant, though he is both a giant and and ogre. I'd avoid "Shrek" references because a) Shrek has such a different color, and b) there might be copyright issues.)
  • For the reptile skin: "See you later, alligator!" (Alternatively: "Crocodile for a while?" - I know it's originally "in a while crocodile" in the lyrics.)
  • For the skeleton skin: "Take off your skin and dance around in your bones!" (Alternatively: "Actually, no skin at all." or "Skin? Who needs skin anyway?".)
  • For the transparent skin: "Go open source! See-through surface for fans of transparency." (Or just the first part, or just the second. Maybe this could be phrased better? Some pun on metaphorical transparency anyway.)

I would call the red and blue special shirt "Plaid shirt"

Bangs (in order):
Soft bangs
Straight bangs
Strong bangs

Free hair:
Thin ponytail
Thick ponytail

Hairstyle set 1:
2 - Thin (twin) ponytails
4 - Thick (twin) ponytails
5 - Long curly hair
6 - Short curly hair
7 - Long straight hair
8 - Short straight hair

Hairstyle set 2:
9 - Right pigtail
10 - Right bun
11 - Left pigtail
12 - Left bun
13 - Twin pigtails
14 - Twin buns

Beards:
1 - Goatee
2 - Full beard
3 - Long beard

For the basic skins, I like the idea to give them foodish names. Perhaps:
Toffee
Peach
Caramel
Coffee
Mocha
Chocolate

Duplicate "Red Hair" (Basic + Rainbow)

To avoid conflicts and confusion, I think the two red hair versions in the Basic and Rainbow Hair Colors shouldn't both simply be called "red hair". I'd suggest keeping "red hair" in the Basic Hair Colors, and choosing something more fancy ("scarlet"? "cherry red"? "ruby red" (or just "ruby")? Any other synonym?) for the Rainbow Hair Colors.

Mustaches

I'd suggest "short mustache" and "long mustache". (There are many names for many mustache styles, but a) calling the long one anything would narrow it down to one style, whereas now everyone can choose to imagine it as a handlebar moustache or a Fu Manchu mustache or whatever they like, and b) then you'd have to call the short one a toothbrush mustache, and... ugh... I don't even want to go there. _shudders_ Plus if we ever get a toothbrush as equipment, it would lead to confusion.)

Basic Skins

(Commenting @UnexpectedMushroom )

I like the "food skin names" list - but I disagree on which should be which.

  • ddc994 (no. 1): I rather agree with "toffee". (I think it looks a lot more like "halva", but that's probably not widely known enough. An alternative might be "sesame". Toffee is often darker - but sounds more yummy than sesame!)
  • f5a76e (no. 2): I agree with "peach".
  • ea8349 (no. 3): I agree with "caramel".
  • c06534 (no. 4): I don't think that's coffee - at least not black coffee without anything added. I think that's "mocha". (For reference, see pictures of mocha coffee and mocha color and mocha skin.)
  • 98461a (no. 5): I think that's too dark for mocha. I think that's classic "chocolate" color. (Or if you want to use "dark chocolate" for no. 6, then this would be "milk chocolate".)
  • 915533 (no. 6) I think that's too dark for (normal/average) chocolate. It's "coffee" (in its pure state). If that leads to too many questions about coffee with or without milk, it could be "espresso", that's always without milk and very dark (though it can have lighter foam on top). Or, alternatively, it could be "dark chocolate".

And the blue and green skin would probably be "artificial food coloring" and "spinach". ;P (Just joking, I think we can leave "blue" and "green" for those?)

My sugestion for some descriptions of the skins

Supernatural Skins

  • ogre - Ogre Skin - You feel like beein part of an horde. Confers no benefits
  • skeleton2 - skeleton skin - Roam some dark castles. Confers no benefits
  • Reptile - Reptile Skin - Don't doubt that reptilians exists. Confers no benefits
  • transparent - Transparent Skin - Your full body is the window to your soul. Confers no benefits

Supernatural Skins

  • clownfish - Clownfish Skin - You may know some jokes! Confers no benefits
  • deepocean - Deep Ocean Skin - Hello darkness my old friend. Confers no benefits
  • merblue - Blue Merperson Skin - A siren for an Alien. Confers no benefits
  • mergold - Gold Merperson Skin - Attractive as midas touch. Confers no benefits
  • mergreen - Green Merperson Skin - Too many time in water got you some mold. Confers no benefits
  • merruby - Ruby Merperson Skin - Hot as fire even in water. Confers no Benefits
  • shark - Shark Skin - Danger to the beach people. Confers no benefits
  • tropicalwater - Tropical Water Skin - One with the water. Confers no benefits

Ooh! What about wood colours?
Maybe...
Pine
Oak
Cherry
Ceder
Jarrah
Walnut

For Shimmery or Pastel, maybe "Ooh, shiny! hair. Confers no benefit."? Also, Shimmery Green has the description "Shimmery blue hair. Confers no benefit."

I'm not sure I agree with food names for the more "humanoid" skins (that is, most of the basic set); I know a few people who have had their skin called by food names, and it made them feel uncomfortable (none of these people I know are on Habitica AFAIK, but their discomfort shows that it could hurt some people who _do_ use Habitica).

Further, since I presume these colors would (or could be configured to) be read to screen reader users, it might be best to just describe the skins by their actual color as best we can, in order to lessen confusion, since they don't have any particular theme. For example:

  • "Cool pale skin" (as in cool color, not cool like awesome... but perhaps me having to explain that means it's not a good choice...), or "[whatever indescribable color that is] light skin", or the earlier mentioned "beige"?
  • "Warm pale skin" or "pinkish light skin"?
  • "Pale medium brown"?
  • "Dark medium brown"?

But then of course, as I'm writing, my descriptions are becoming less succinct and might be better as a description... and I'm not sure how clear they are.

By the way, the "convict" shirt is colored more like an American referee's shirt. XP

Looking around, the Data Display tool has names for many of these; let me read through them...

EDIT:

Skin names in the Data Display Tool (from left to right in the basic set):

  • palest brown
  • pink
  • orange
  • light brown
  • medium brown
  • dark brown
  • blue
  • green

I'm not sure these are the clearest names ever, I'm just putting them there for the info. XP

Striped: ...Oh, hey, this is labeled convict in the DDT. 0_o (I don't know what I was expecting, to be honest. Everything but the skin colors in the avatar info there seems to use the number or the id name.)

Even more skin color edit:

I put the hex value identifiers in ColorHexa, which gives an approximate basic description of the color, and received the following:

  • Very soft orange
  • Soft orange (Note: The hex color looks a bit different from the actual skin color. )
  • Soft orange (Well... this plan is already falling short and I'm not even halfway through. :-/ )
  • Moderate orange
  • Dark orange [brown tone]
  • Dark moderate orange

Strangely, all were orange hues. 0_o On a not-skin-related note, I think the basic red and rainbow red should be differentiated; perhaps the rainbow red can be "bright red" or something to that effect? (Aaaand I missed someone bringing this up.)

Note: there will be a changelog in the main issue, so please check that!

Sorry to butt in on skin naming discussions, but I think the candycane hair should probably be called "Candy Cane Hair" rather than "Candy cane Hair" (note casing) for consistency.

Derp. My bad.

GOGGLES! We need a goggle option. Be them up on the head or down over the eyes. No benefits but...options. Similar to animal ears, but GOOGLES! (sorry i'm a goggle enthusiast.) The Steampunk community would be joyous, the raver community would be gaga, and the Cats of Treasure Town (mad props to those who get that movie reference) would be BESIDE THEMSELVES.

_coughs_ I enjoy my ability to read...and hate when I fail it. Sorry on that mate.

@pinkfloydsgurl Unfortunately, this issue is not discussing new customization options, just the names for the currently used options. If you want, you can suggest your idea on the Trello

@MathWhiz , do you think you could/should add the already suggested strings to the main issue (as you already did with the striped shirt and skeleton skin), complete with change log, and mark those that are still being discussed (maybe by adding  or an under discussion label or similar)? If there are several suggestions, you can enter them all. (I know that basically everything in the main issue tables is still under discussion at this point - but we're already quite content with some, I think.)

Btw., (spelling error), it's "cedar", not "ceder". Oh, and in your Basic Skin color post with the table (thank you!), you left out some of my suggestions (probably intentionally since they were probably just not that good - which is fine). Just in case it was unintentional: I suggested

  • "light pink" and "pinkish" as alternatives for "rosy" (though I think I like "rosy" best),
  • "bronze" and "tawny" as alternatives for the "caramel" color (I like "caramel" but we may need the others in case we decide not to use food-related terms because, as @citrusella pointed out (thank you!), some people feel uncomfortable with them),
  • ... uh, I made some more but I guess you can forget about the "coffee" and "espresso" and "halva" because they're really not that good. :) Also, the "light chocolate" you used is better than the "milk chocolate" I suggested first.

Also, @citrusella , thank you for bringing up the screen reader topic! I guess that's important. It means the verbal descriptions should give visually impaired people at least a rough clue what to expect when choosing that option. (Most of them do that already, I guess.) So it's also a strong argument against mere numbering (like "Bangs 1, Bangs 2, Bangs 3"). And, uh, honestly, the wood names sound nice, but I at least would have no idea which wood has which color without extensive googling first. (Okay, I suggested "ebony" first, you caught me there. But I guess "ebony" is more widely known as a color.)

| And | now | I | must |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| find | out | how | @MathWhiz |
| created | those | tables | ! |
| Ahhh | , | nifty | :exclamation: |

(If anyone's interested, just google "markdown tables".)

P.S. @pinkfloydsgurl I probably shouldn't even answer you here (because it's not on topic), and please don't answer me here either for the same reason - I'm just doing it because I'm writing an on-topic post anyway. There are various kinds of goggles in Habitica (and you can wear them both up on the head and down over the eyes, even at the same time, and they're steampunk). Please use your enjoyable ability to read to learn more about them in the Habitica wiki!

I agree with @lemoness that this all might be unnecessary. Minimally, and most relevant for the moment, I think it is out of scope of the costume section of the member modal. Maybe this should be left as suggestion/discussion for now?

@khipkin What do you suggest I do instead for the names of the options?

@lemoness the use of the descriptions is to keep consistency with the currently localized options. The popovers used require a title and a body as well, so without the description, it looks odd.

@habitrpguser Sorry for omitting some of your suggestions! My mistake 😳

@everyone Thank you all for your input! I really appreciate all of the insightful input! I will try to integrate your suggestions ASAP, I have just been super busy.

I have looked at the wikia (as per @lemoness' suggestion), and most of the current names (with the exception of the "convict" shirt and possibly the "redblue" shirt) have the same names as in the wiki. However, the names currently being debated over (hair base, bangs, mustaches, etc.) only have numbers for their name. However @habitrpguser noted that it would not be very screen-reader friendly to only use numbers as their name; my idea is to have a more detailed description, but keep the numbers as their names (anybody know how screen readers work w/ the currently named items?)

Regarding the base color skins, the only way (that I can see) to mitigate complaints is to use the hex values.

  • Most of the names (food, wood, etc.) can make people feel uncomfortable and has been vetoed by @lemoness
  • While using numbers is simpler, they could be interpreted as "ranking" the skin colors

I could be wrong, so I am open to opinions

Looking at the current code that displays the avatar customization options, I noticed the page doesn't use aria labels (used by screen readers), so I was wondering if the current tooltips work with screen readers.

The wiki's names are at http://habitica.wikia.com/wiki/Avatar_Customizations although we don't necessarily have to keep them unchanged.

I don't recall where they came from - they might all be from the site itself. I think it's likely that the DDT uses the same names (if not, one or both of them should be changed).

@Alys looking at the identifiers used it the site, they most likely used the code

@MathWhiz Exclude all of this from the costume section of the member modal; just include the gear for now as a minimum viable product. Then, if desired, all of this can be included in a separate future change.

Ok, then my work on my PR is done!

I just thought of an interesting idea make the lightest ☺ and the darkest ☻

Transparent Skin Description: G-g-g-g-ghost!

@MathWhiz

I saw your comment about numbering the skins being considered ranking; I see your point and I think the easiest way is to number them from lightest to darkest or darkest to lightest. Personally I would start with the darkest as number one and go up to the lightest. I think this will get the least push back as 0 is black in Hex.

@all Thank you all for helping me! I am so grateful for all of your contributions! I am sorry for not integrating everyone's suggestions yet (very busy irl 😅), but I will look again at everyone's changes.

I have selected @habitrpguser as the challenge's winner, due to their many helpful and detailed suggestions. Thanks all for your help!

(Tagging this as in progress even though there's no PR because actual work is happening in the issue - feel free to ignore this comment)

@paglias I think it might make more sense to tag this as discussion

Names and descriptions of these items are no longer shown on the new website. :(

I'm closing this since translations are no longer relevant.
