Gutenberg: Iterate on design to add option to select the style for default on block

There is now an option to select a style by default:

I wonder if changing this to be a checkbox like we use for galleries could be an option?

I'm not sure if a default state is really necessary honestly - as the default style is stated in the select. 🤷‍♂️

The design team discussed this during a triage session in Slack today (Note: You may need a Slack account to log in.)

The overall consensus was that, while this seems a good approach on the surface, on closer evaluation it may cause more confusion than it resolves:

  • The checkbox looks like an _active_ state, when it's actually indicating a _default_ state.
  • It reuses an existing pattern (the checkbox from galleries) but doesn't use it in the same way or to indicate the same meaning. (In a gallery, a checkmark means "add this", which is effectively "active", but here we're using it instead to mean "this is the default styling for my site.")
  • Setting a default style is a secondary action—users will likely only set their default once or twice, but they may change styles on a per block basis more frequently.
  • There may especially be some confusion around active/default states when the active state isn't the default:

That said, the select solution may not be the best way of expressing this new functionality to users. Further exploration may be warranted to find an effective solution. Some things worth considering here:

  • Do we have any existing patterns for setting defaults?
  • Is there a centralised place where this setting might live?
  • Does the "default" label change when the user sets a different default from the out-of-the-box default?
  • How do we ensure that active and default are clearly defined?

I'm not sure if a default state is really necessary honestly - as the default style is stated in the select. 🤷‍♂️

I agree with Rich that. It seems pretty clear as it is.

This issue was discussed during the Design team's Gutenberg triage meeting (requires registration).

We agreed that this is unnecessary given that the default style is indicated in the dropdown.
