Google-play-music-desktop-player-unofficial-: Feature: Play status displayed as part of OSX menu bar icon

Created on 5 Jul 2016  ยท  20Comments  ยท  Source: MarshallOfSound/Google-Play-Music-Desktop-Player-UNOFFICIAL-

As a long time user of the browser based app, I loved being able to see whether there was a song playing by looking at the browser tab and observing whether the speaker icon was displayed.

Often I just take my headphones off and walk away from my desk without pausing/stopping. The most unfortunate consequence of this is when you later unplug your headphones and the music is blaring from the built in speakers, drawing the unwanted attention of a host of co-workers.

Having a play or pause icon displayed as part of the menu bar icon would be useful for this, similar to sync apps like Google Drive, Tresorit, etc. I've attached a screenshot showing the Tresorit paused state as an example.

I vote for the first 2, as they give an indication which app the icons relate to. Play and Pause on their own are too generic imo.

Personally I like black icons in the OSX system menu bar, or at least an option to have black.

@adamwoodnz Fair enough, I'm sure we've all done that one time or another.

Out of interest how does that icon look when the player is in a stopped state. I.e. no music playing and the app was just opened.

Just not sure that the app should open in a paused state even though no music is playing. I would like to somehow represent that no music is playing but it isn't technically paused

I'm seeing this as well, my bar icon is the same for all 3 states (just launched app (no queue), playing, paused):

I imagine stopped would be just the default, play and pause would have the appropriate icon, possibly as well as the music note. I could design some icons if you're interested.

I think this feature would give nice feedback when controlling the player via quick keys too.

@shakeelmohamed Too clarify this is a feature request not a bug report. It should look the same at the moment.

@adamwoodnz That makes sense, if you could spin up something that would be great. Our current icon's are availible as SVG's here Logo, Tray

๐Ÿ† @adamwoodnz Ping RE this

Sorry struggling to find any extra time atm :( Still keen to help.

This issue has been added to the 4.0.0 milestone.

What does this mean?
It means that the next major release _should_ contain this feature / bugfix. If you are responsible for this issue please ensure that it is fully up to date to give me the best change of implementing / fixing what needs to be done.

What do you need to do?
If the issue is tagged with "Awaiting Response" it means that I need something from you, be that more information or in some cases a PR with the issue resolution ๐Ÿ‘ . Just do whatever you can to help me sort it out.

So when will this glorious 4.0.0 release come out?
Who knows... ๐Ÿ˜† The major component of 4.0.0 is a rewrite of ALL the renderer process code and logic into a React based toolkit that I am creating from scratch over in #1581 . Subscribe there for more updates as 4.0.0 will not be released until that is merged.

I could provide some new icons with a small play pause symbol at the bottom
corner of it or maybe as a replacement of the music tone, but would
appreciate it if someone wants to do the programming side of things.
Guess it would be better if its an optional thing,so a setting option is a
good thing

concept-comp

sooo which one do you thing is the best? the upper two or lower two?

example 1
example 2

here also how it would look like on a 1080p screen

@berryelectronics I prefer the bottom 2

I have one more conception. Because play and pause icons are very small and in some screen they won't look ok. I like concept of note to know what program run.

This is great from two of worlds and take little more space. Need of course polish. There is one more think - can be easy dark or light.
google play music

Top: Running app
Middle: Music playing
Bottom: Music paused
Can be added icon with:

  • need attention (exclamation mark) - when error occur or lost connection
  • there is new version (arrow up)
Can be stack each other (max 3 icon on bar and only in period of time)

PS. Sorry for cutting icon.

@Triloworld Unfortunately tray icons on Windows and most Linux OS's need to be fill a square area.

@berryelectronics I have to agree with @adamwoodnz the original identifier of the app needs to be visible inside the tray icon at all times, otherwise a user may not recognize it,.

Ok. I will change them to the first examples again, but maybe a big bigger
than in the example

Got the code-site of things working, only have to make some new icons.
@MarshallOfSound can you give me a hint where you've hidden the settings file so i could add a settings option to enable it? :D

@berryelectronics If you are attacking the v4 branch it is now insanely simple to add new settings. (Think one line of code ๐Ÿ˜† )

But why do we need to this to be a setting? I want this to be the default on all OS's ๐Ÿ‘

Ok, if you want :+1:

This is awesome, thanks @berryelectronics @MarshallOfSound
