Executables usually don't have icons in most Linux DEs, what makes icons appear on the desktop or in the main menu is usually a .desktop file which can link to the executable and an icon.

The exporter could be modified to create a .desktop file.

yeah that might be an option.
usually there is a /usr/share/applications/ contains all the links for all apps on a linux machine.
I assume if there was an option in the editor settings to create shortcuts, to make a .dekstop file in this location, it would allow a user to select godot from their application selector...

Hmm, usually when you're exporting the game that means that you're the developer. I personally don't need my game to be "installed" to my system while exporting. It might be a good idea to include an "installation script" that creates a .desktop file in /usr/share/applications/.

For me exporting is just a local operation - I don't want an export to install the game right away.

But that's just an opinion. It could be done, would require root rights though. .local/share/applications might be the better place. But I still think an export shouldn't "install" anything.

Oh im not talking about my game here, im talking about the godot
binary/editor itself.

Ah, like a make install but for Scons.

That's doable.
