Glimpse 0.1.2 crashes after launch on Arch Linux after compiling from a tar.xz source

Describe the bug

Glimpse 0.1.2 crashes after launch on Arch Linux after compiling from a tar.xz source. It shouldn't crash. Interestingly this behaviour is similar if I try to install Glimpse through snapd.

As @marvkal pointed out on the Matrix channel, this might be a duplicate from #340 and already solved in later updates. But my intention is to build a PKGBUILD from the stable branch and maybe that's no possible currently, maybe wait for 0.1.4 to become the stable branch.

To Reproduce

Steps to reproduce the behavior (terminal):

  1. wget https://github.com/glimpse-editor/Glimpse/releases/download/v0.1.2/glimpse-0.1.2.tar.xz
  2. tar -xf glimpse-0.1.2.tar.xz
  3. cd glimpse-0.1.2
  4. Install dependencies: sudo pacman -S -y gegl libmypaint gtk2 pygtk openexr poppler-glib poppler-data mypaint-brushes1 git intltool libxslt gtk-doc ghostscript libxpm libheif libwebp libmng libwmf iso-codes aalib appstream-glib xdg-utils atk babl cairo fontconfig freetype2 gdk-pixbuf2 glib2 glib-networking harfbuzz lbzip2 libjpeg lzip libpng librsvg libtiff lcms2 libtiger pango zlib

Expected behavior

Glimpse should not crash after launch.

The patch needed to fix this will be included with the 0.1.4 release tarballs. If it would be helpful I can also create them as part of the beta?

@TrechNex I'm unable to get even past ./autogen.sh:

  • It complains about gtk-doc and intltool which I then was able to install.
  • But then it complains about a bunch of other things, like pygtk, which is only available through AUR (saw people talking about it on the Arch Linux forums saying that "pygtk is dead") as it is not supported officially by Arch Linux anymore.
  • pygtk-codegen doesn't exists on Arch Linux, in either official Packages or AUR.
  • python-cairo, libmypaint, mypaint-brushes and poppler-data all exists and are already installed, but it complains about them not being installed nonetheless.

You're building this on a distro like Ubuntu aren't you? I see a lot of old packages as requirements. It even complains about libtool being "too new" Major version might be too new. Arch Linux is bleeding edge, rolling release and focused on 64 bit. I assume not everything is supported anymore, specially with old packages like pygtk from Python 2.

Sincerely, I don't want to deal with this mess. I'll just wait for an auto updatable _AppImage_. I'm not interested in making an AUR package anymore, dealing with deprecated packages on Arch Linux is asking for trouble and profound headaches and frustration afterwards.

Add that to the fact that _GTK4_ is coming. Frankly, aside from the _AppImage_ which will be absolutely awesome, the rewrite is the hope I personally hang on to now.

I am hoping other Linux distros donā€™t follow suit, because upstream are not upgrading the 2.10.x releases to Python 3. That change is coming with version 3.0, and we already know that will need us to do a complete re-fork.

Distros like Ubuntu LTS, Debian, CentOS or RHEL are unlikely to drop support for those. It's their aim to be stable and compatible. Derivatives will probably follow their steps. Things like Mint or Elementary.

The same can't be said for bleeding edge distros like Fedora or rolling release ones like Arch Linux, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, Manjaro, etc.

tbh I have concerns about the rewrite from a technical perspective.

If it had stuck to a GTK front end for BABL & GEGL (as originally pitched) and chose a language like C, C++ or Java then it would have engaged a lot of peopleā€™s interest, would make sense from a longevity/maintainability standpoint, would be deliverable in a sensible timeframe, and working on it wouldā€™ve been my preference over re-forking 3.0.

The cross-platform compatibility issues can be managed by making automated CI build & packaging incrementally from the start, and TDD/BDD would ensure clean well-tested code.

The current trajectory lacks focus, massively expands the scope, is going to rack up a lot of tech debt, and is going to come unstuck when it reaches the point of transforming images (which requires highly complex mathematics, algorithms that are not easily ported, and possibly libraries that would need new D language bindings).

This is why I treat it more as a learning exercise for all involved, with the beneficial side-effect of generating interesting ideas for a future ā€œhard forkā€.

Of course, my opinion is one among many, and I may yet be proven wrong! šŸ˜…

I can't say much about the technical side as that's not my area of expertise. My enthusiasm comes from the chance to take Glimpse further UI/UX wise with the rewrite, since any small change we could possibly do on the current fork requires a huge amount of effort and is always discouraging for everybody involved, plus all the legacy mistakes inherited, for example, there are visual mistakes on the current default icon theme that are unacceptable IMHO, and I can't just "fix" them without a nightmare coming your way or anyone involved in fixing image paths on the fork or dealing with resizing UI elements and keeping parity with upstream at the same time.

I'm marking this as fixed as we did resolve the original bug (code crashing on GNOME 3.36).

I think we will need to thoroughly test the output make dist on distros like Fedora and Arch, as I suspect we will need to find workarounds for their lack of Python2 support
