Ghcide: `ghcide` fails for `ghcide` using cabal in windows

Created on 6 Jun 2020  路  21Comments  路  Source: haskell/ghcide

Using the latest HEAD, if I type ghcide in the ghcide directory then it fails:

  cabal: Failed to build process-1.6.9.0 (which is required by ghcide-0.2.0).
  See the build log above for details.

I blame Cabal for being crap and pretending Windows isn't a thing. But the experience is that Ghcide sucks for me, and is no use when developing Ghcide. I don't have any idea how to get around this, or even why Cabal wants process-1.6.9.0 in the first place.

I've tried Cabal 3.0 and Cabal 2.4, both fail. This is with GHC 8.6.5 (the last GHC release to not fail on Windows)

The process dependency has just been added to master as part of the benchmark target, in case that helps.

extra depends on process, so it's always been a transitive dependency anyway - I don't think benchmark changes anything. I think the move to multi-component or a library upgrade somewhere is somehow causing it to demand a newer process, and thus fall over.

To confirm, I commented out ghcide-benchmark and the error is exactly the same.

Not sure if it is a question of luck but i can install ghcide (and hls) in windows for ghc-8.8 and ghc-8.10 using cabal v2-install. The ghc bug is only triggered building with stack for me.

I tried to reproduce, installing ghcide with cabal v2-install -w ghc-8.6.5 and setting ghc-8.6.5 as defult ghc on path and i get no errors related with the process package. It does not load all files but i think it is expected.

With ghcide linked with ghc-8.8.3 i can load the modules in vscode. I could test ghc-8.6.5 but i suppose it would work.

The log loading a module in vscode:

[client] run command = "ghcide --lsp"
[client] debug command = "ghcide --lsp"
ghcide version: 0.2.0 (GHC: 8.8.3) (PATH: D:\bin\ghcide.exe)

If you are seeing this in a terminal, you probably should have run ghcide WITHOUT the --lsp option!

Trying in MSys shells etc I eventually get to:

C:\/msys64/tmp/cabal-install.-9748/dist-newstyle/tmp/src-9748/process-1.6.10.0/configure: fork failed: no error [2093]
cabal3.exe: Missing dependency on a foreign library:
* Missing (or bad) header file: runProcess.h

And runProcess.h is in the .cabal file. But then I upgrade Cabal, clean stuff, and it goes away leaving me with:

$ cabal3 v2-install
...
abnormal program termination
C:\/msys64/tmp/cabal-install.-8608/dist-newstyle/tmp/src-8608/process-1.6.10.0/configure: fork failed: no error [49]

I'm totally lost. Stack however can install Ghcide perfectly.

@jneira what process has your Cabal decided upon? And if you try and manually install process-1.6.10.0 what happens?

cabal-plan shows process-1.6.9.0 and process-1.6.5.0, i think the latter is the ghc-8.6.5builtin and the former the chosen one for building ghcide. So 1.6.9.0 is already int he cabal store.

I cant install process-1.6.10.0, it always throws:

PS D:\dev\ws\haskell\ghcide> cabal install process-1.6.10.0 --lib

The build is succesful with ghc-8.6.5 too.

I totally failed when downloading the package with get on its own too. And I have no idea why it picked up 1.6.10.0. Any chance you hadn't done a cabal update in a while, so 1.6.9 was the most recent one you had known to Cabal?

You are right, after a cabal update it is picking 1.6.10.0 to build ghcide
The output of cabal-plan info after a cabal update && cabal build -w ghc-8.6.5 --dry-run: https://gist.github.com/jneira/f8b305e9cf47387445fb7bca3a13b3c6

The processs dependency seems to come from hsc2hs-0.68.7.

I am installing ghcide with a full cabal build -w ghc-8.6.5....
EDIT: the build was succesful too (using process-1.6.10.0)

@ndmitchell as a workaround maybe you could add a constraint to make cabal pick an older version of process. To make it persistent and force hie-bios cabal calls to use it you could add a cabal.project like:

packages: .
-- To force use ghc-8.6.5 and match the ghc version linked with ghcide
with-compiler: ghc-8.6.5

-- replacing 1.6.8.0 with a working version
constraints: process <= 1.6.8.0

That cabal.project finds a solver plan for me.

If you want try to stack instead you could use this hie.yaml:

cradle:
  multi:
    - path: "./test/data"
      config: { cradle: { none:  } }
    - path: "./"
      config:
        cradle:
          stack:
            - path: "./src"
              component: "ghcide:lib"
            - path: "./exe"
              component: "ghcide:exe:ghcide"
            - path: "./test"
              component: "ghcide:test:ghcide-tests"
            - path: "./bench"
              component: "ghcide:bench:ghcide-bench"
            - path: "./test/preprocessor"
              component: "ghcide:exe:ghcide-test-preprocessor"

It works for me too, opening modules in vscode.

To make it persistent and force hie-bios cabal calls to use it you could add a cabal.project

hie-bios does not honour the ghc set in cabal.project so it would need the ghc in path is the required one by ghcide. To make it use the desired version of process a previous manual cabal build could do the job.

With the stack bases hie.yaml i've got a quite good result calling ghcide in the cli over itself:

Files that failed:
 * D:\dev\ws\haskell\ghcide\exe\Main.hs
 * D:\dev\ws\haskell\ghcide\src-ghc810\Development\IDE\GHC\HieAst.hs
 * D:\dev\ws\haskell\ghcide\src-ghc88\Development\IDE\GHC\HieAst.hs

Completed (60 files worked, 3 files failed)

Full log here: https://gist.github.com/jneira/f8b305e9cf47387445fb7bca3a13b3c6#file-stack-hie-yaml-txt

I am preparing a pr to add the stack based hie.yaml

EDIT: pr with the stack hie.yaml #626

The Stack hie.yaml works. I tried constraints to force Cabal into old versions on the command line, and it totally ignored them :(.

You are right, no way to make cabal not picking process-1.6.10.0. I think cabal handle boot libraries in a special way: it seems it has a hardcoded "use last minor version if possible" and you cant override it. Weird.

Btw i am using the latest cabal version, 3.2, downloaded from the official site.

@ndmitchell I see you have this error:

  C:\/Neil/ghcide/dist-newstyle/tmp/src-6052/process-1.6.9.0/configure: command too long:

Maybe there's a way to get around the command length limitations on windows and all the other errors are a symptom of this? It looks like this ghc issue talks about this problem.

I have ghcide in D:\dev\ws\haskell\ghcide (longer than C:\Neil\ghcide) and i have not enabled long paths option in windows. ghcide with process-1.6.9.0 still builds succesfully.

I have enabled long paths. It may well be the length of the PATH variable or other variables that are being sliced in. Using configure on Windows through Cabal is a mess :(. Unfortunately the source of the command length limit is configure, not GHC, so I suspect there's little to be done there.

My configure comes from my git installation, i checked it with cabal build -v3 inside the downloaded process-1.6.10.0:

"D:\dev\app\Git\bin\sh.exe" "D:\/dev/ws/haskell/temp/process-1.6.10.0/configure" "--with-compiler=ghc" "--prefix=C:\Users\atrey\AppData\Roaming\cabal" "--bindir=C:\Users\atrey\AppData\Roaming\cabal\bin" "--libdir=C:\Users\atrey\AppData\Roaming\cabal\x86_64-windows-ghc-8.8.3\process-1.6.10.0-inplace" "--libexecdir=C:\Users\atrey\AppData\Roaming\cabal\process-1.6.10.0-inplace\x86_64-windows-ghc-8.8.3\process-1.6.10.0" "--datadir=C:\Users\atrey\AppData\Roaming\cabal\x86_64-windows-ghc-8.8.3\process-1.6.10.0" "--sysconfdir=C:\Users\atrey\AppData\Roaming\cabal\etc" "CC=D:\bin\stack\x86_64-windows\ghc-8.8.3\lib\../mingw/bin\gcc.exe"

I have %GIT_HOME%\bin in PATH. Just in case my git version is

D:\dev\ws\haskell\temp\process-1.6.10.0>git --version
git version 2.27.0.windows.1

And the sh version used by git:

D:\dev\ws\haskell\temp\process-1.6.10.0>sh --version
GNU bash, version 4.4.23(1)-release (x86_64-pc-msys)

I tried my Git Bash installation, but it fails to install process again:

$ git --version
git version 2.18.0.windows.1

$ sh --version
GNU bash, version 4.4.19(2)-release (x86_64-pc-msys)

Sadly, it seems GHC 8.8-8.10 are segfault-happy on Windows, and Cabal is just not designed with the requirements of "works on Windows" in mind. I'm going to go hack some Rust which managed to get all this right 馃槩.

To add another case, i've been able to built hls (that includes ghcide and process-1.6.10.0) with ghc-8.6.5 in windows 7.
I had to use a msys2 console cause i haven't the git bash on default path, msys2 was installed with msys2-x86_64-20180531.exe

@ndmitchell not sure if we can do much here about that :worried: , so maybe we could close this one

Yeah, I think its a case of Cabal sucking, rather than Ghcide.
