Game-compatibility: Max Payne 2 [TT-012] [1.02]

Created on 1 Apr 2018  路  7Comments  路  Source: Cxbx-Reloaded/game-compatibility

Description

The game crashes instantly with the screen below unless you rename the "movies" folder in the game.

If the "movies" folder is renamed it then gets to the menus without graphical glitches but crackly audio when menu buttons are pressed. When starting a game the loading screen goes all the way along but then crashes:

Oh, well. If I knew that renaming the folder with videofiles could help that much. Oh.)

Other games on the compatibility issues list seem have done a little more with the video folder renamed. I thought I'd check it on my games and this is the one game it worked on.

Unlike the first Max Payne game which plays the visuals nicely (Level loading hang is still an issue), the PC's model in this sequel instead is 'T-posed' and wrongly orientated while his body mesh textures are discolored (Black and little bit of dark red). His model can sometimes vanish.
Level graphics are mostly alright. GUI is probably fine.

Just another test-case message and a little status update.

Edit: I just realized that my game is version 1.01 and not 1.02, should I make a separate issue or no?

Currently, menu graphics are OK, but the "How to play" section doesn't actually show anything, it just shows the background image of the menu without the menu text. There are minor graphical issues such as flickering. Quite often during gameplay, the screen goes black and requires you to press A to continue. I suspect this happens when some cutscenes play (the intro cutscene works just fine), but I don't have an Xbox to test it on myself. Also, the "Bullet Time" mode definitely doesn't display as intended. The gun's shadow doesn't display right in some lighting. The audio seems to loop the first part of spoken dialogue. A good way through the first mission, the game completely crashes Cxbx-Reloaded.

Tested on https://github.com/Cxbx-Reloaded/Cxbx-Reloaded/releases/tag/CI-357948a on 12/21/2020.
