Mint 19, dual boot with windows 8.1 and about 10 minutes after booting this morning I got the error message.

I was having this issue for some time (Ubuntu 18.10) but after running sudo fwupdmgr refresh --verbose the error went away and I can't reproduce it. The output of the command listed nothing notable - it just downloaded the file and worked like it should. Later I thought to check the .cache/fwupd permissions. Some files were owned by root. I ended up blowing the whole dir away and re-running without sudo, everything still seems fine.

Can you download https://cdn.fwupd.org/downloads/firmware.xml.gz.asc in your browser?

I'm having this problem as well on Fedora 29. And yes, I can download https://cdn.fwupd.org/downloads/firmware.xml.gz.asc in the browser and in the terminal with wget, as well.

If you need any other information, please let me know.

  • How did you install fwupd (ex: from source, pacman, apt-get, etc):
Was installed out-of-the-box, but I guess "via dnf" would be the correct answer?!

  • Have you tried rebooting?
Yes, error still appears. It doesn't come everytime Software is opened but it does reliably come "at some point", regardless of any reboots or anything.

  • Are you using an NVMe disk?
    Yes (see above).

  • Is secure boot enabled (only for the UEFI plugin)?
    Yes.

Same issue here, also on Fedora 29. Same answers as @tstoeckler, except not using a NVMe disk and secure boot is disabled.

I have the same problem. I can access the URL by Firefox and wget, but not from fwupd. I have Ubuntu 18.10

Same issue with Debian 10.

Although, it might be caused by something else (GNOME Software ?), since I also get a failed to download https://odrs.gnome.org/1.0/reviews/api/ratings: Cannot resolve hostname.

Proxy settings maybe?

I don't think so. I am using the standard network setup from the Debian installer.

Can you please run it like this:

# fwupdmgr refresh --verbose

And share all of the output? We'll see what next steps are after that.

Also having this issue, on Fedora.
As requested:
fwupdmgr refresh --verbose
Error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.fwupd: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.TimedOut: Failed to activate service 'org.freedesktop.fwupd': timed out (service_start_timeout=25000ms)

Noticed also though, the download of firmware.xml.gz.asc fails with "insufficient permissions" from the browser for me.
(Looks like that's the result of a separate, more temporary issue - might be best to disregard this for now)

Can you share your fwupd systems unit journal?

Definitely disregard my last comment.
Filesystem and some kernel modules were totally borked, and after fixing them I'm not getting the same issue at all.
Will let you know if I run into it again with more info.

was working fine.

Hi. I'm having the same issue just now. Getting 503 when I'm trying to connect directly ( fresh ubuntu 19.04 installation ) 2 days ago it worked out of the box. I don't know whether I messed up my configuration or the service just doesn't work right now.

@tarach nope, it's everyone. The AMS datacenter is down: https://status.scaleway.com/

Is there no way to work around this?

@aplatypus depends on the failure you're seeing. The datacenter wasn't down since May...

@hughsie well from the GUI i just get told I'm unable to update. That's about as non-specific as it gets as far as I'm concerned.

When that message shows in the app store / software updates area, you may not click on the message or the URL shown. There is no hit or path to a log file to check. It is a UX _cul de sac_ _imho_.

However ... I used the command example given earlier:

fwupdmgr refresh --verbose

and it failed with "Permission denied." A clue I hear shouted from the crowd ... Perhaps.

sudo fwupdmgr refresh --verbose

100% done / successful I'm guessing.

So here's a thing, does the software manager need to run as admin?

I have the same problem and I can download via browser.
I'm using Fedora 30

fwupdmgr refresh

Can you do this please:

sudo dnf debuginfo-install fwupd
export G_DEBUG=fatal-criticals
gdb --args /usr/bin/fwupdmgr refresh

then wait for the "crash", then do:

t a a bt

then paste the backtrace. Thanks.

Sorry, I've done that but nothing happens!!

Gah, sorry, I forgot a step, sorry. Type r and enter before the bt command.

Sorry about this, but I found the problem, for some reason the version installed was the 32 bit version instead of the 64 bit version, after remove and install the right version everything works as expected.
