Freecodecamp: Lost progress after the update

Created on 31 May 2018  ·  36Comments  ·  Source: freeCodeCamp/freeCodeCamp

Describe your problem and - if possible - how to reproduce it

After yesterdays update of the site, I lost lots of my progress.
I've finished:

  • Basic HTML and HTML5
  • Basic CSS
  • Applied Visual Design
  • Applied Accessibility
  • Responsive Web Design Principles
  • CSS Flexbox
  • CSS Grid

Now I have missing tasks from each category above.

I've started Basic Javascript part and was finished with a task to "Use Bracket Notation to Find the Nth-to-Last Character in a String". Everything in Basic Javascript is reset and I must start over?

i've the same problem !

Same problem please solve it quickly because i am stucked and can't work in fcc.

Me too. I have done every challenge under the Javascript(?) certification. And just submitted my last one (simon).

I'm can't get the "go to challenge" page to load at all. Ive tried for the first hour, also have restarted my laptop and still can't figure out the problem. please help I'm really new to this. thank you

Same here. Shows "404. Ooops, we couldn't find that page." on the previous page of my account. I've just went to the basic algorithms in hardships. Please don't tell me I have to restart. o(╥﹏╥)o

Yeah, this is "how not to do update/upgrade"...

Same problem here. I log in with GH if that makes any difference.

Someone here suggested a "hard reset" but I don't know what they mean by that. Reset my browser? Computer? Both?

FOUND IT!

If you click on view the curriculum, then choose the course you were on, you can see your progress.

Exactly where I saw that I miss the tasks. Because yours are there doesn't mean that ours are too... at least mine are not.

Same here. I was automatically taken back to the first lesson.
I was able to find where I was by going to my settings page, and clicking "Show me my public portfolio"
But even when I go to the last lesson I was on, the code is incomplete.
Not sure what to do.

anybody else just get signed out of FCC and when signed back in the sign in only lasts for 1 screen? I can sign in easily, but am immediately signed out when I try to go back to where I was (or view curriculum, etc.)

Thanks!

Same here.I have finished javascript basic and i was supposed to start with the algorithms section, but it seems i ve lost all the basic javascript progress :(

Same boat as many.... worked through the tutorials and basic front-end dev aspects and found after all my efforts...an "update" has not only erased my progress but removed my account entirely as I had it lnked to my google account and had my github linked to it as well. ALL GONE. Definitely not a sound approach to a website update.

Hi guys, I'm really sorry about the inconvenience.
Just want to be clear, was your progress on the main freecodecamp.org or the beta.freecodecamp.org?
I don't know if it has changed, but as far as I know, your progress on these sites were stored separately, and only the one on the main is kept. Your progress on beta probably got deleted after the roll-out.

In order to claim a certificate, you need to finish its 5 final projects. Other lessons are optional.

Mine was on freecodecamp.com. I didn’t even know about beta.freecodecamp.com
until this update that wiped out my progress.

@emdashv @RufusMcdoogan Thanks for the response.
Silly question, but just to be sure: Did you use the same email address to sign in?
I just saw an update in Quincy's post:

If you used to sign in using Google, Facebook, GitHub, Twitter, or LinkedIn, you will need to add your email address to your account here.

If you used other sign in methods apart from email, give the above link a try, maybe it'll work out for you.

Sillier question, but also want to be sure. Where is the form to add my email address? I went to that link when the new site launched, but still do not see a field to add my email address. Sorry if it's somewhere obvious, and I missed it. Lmk if you need any more screenshots.

@emdashv Oh. I guess you were still logged in when you clicked on the link? How it works is the link checks if you have already signed in. If you have, it redirects you to www.freecodecamp.org.
The one in your screenshot is the settings page and it doesn't have an email field. I don't know why. Probably they forgot to add it, or decided to add it later...
You are now still in via email. Let's forget about sign in method for a moment and check the following items:

  • On the www.freecodecamp.org, there is a welcome message, a quote and statistics about your progress. Are the numbers correct for you?
  • If you click the Curriculum button (on the top right), it'll send you to the curriculum page. Do a hard refresh (Ctrl + F5). Can you check if the completed challenges have a green tick? The old challenges are still there but got moved around into smaller sections, so it could take some work to find them.

If the above are correct, then there you go 😄 However, if you can't see the passed solutions, it's a known issue and the team is working on it.
Let me know if it works out for you.

here's my original username/URL that i can no longer access....

@huyenltnguyen Thanks for your reply. I am not logged in via email. I have never had an email login for FCC. I've only logged in via Github.

On the www.freecodecamp.org, there is a welcome message, a quote and statistics about your progress. Are the numbers correct for you?

Yes, I think? I don't know how many courses I completed but I think this could be right?

If you click the Curriculum button (on the top right), it'll send you to the curriculum page. Do a hard refresh (Ctrl + F5). Can you check if the completed challenges have a green tick? The old challenges are still there but got moved around into smaller sections, so it could take some work to find them.

I've hard refreshed multiple times and none of the completed challenges have a green tick.

Does the team have an ETA for a fix? It's frustrating that days have gone by, and I cannot access my old progress.

I just came back to FCC after a couple weeks off to find everything changed and 300+ challenges reset (I was just a few challenges away from the front end certification). It's not only my progress either, all my profile data is gone too, and my username is now a long string of gibberish. Also, are there no passwords now? Every time I log in it asks for an emailed code, there is no password entry field.

I really hope all my work isn't lost, as a lot of the projects build on past concepts, and I looked back at my work frequently. Also, the OCD in me needs check marks and I really don't want to do everything over again.

Is there any hope of recovery?

@emdashv Oh. I apologize for confusing you, don't know why I assumed you logged in with email first, then with github.

Anyway, on the learn.freecodecamp.org, what do you see on the top right corner? Your profile picture or a Sign In button? If the latter, then you'll need to click on the Sign In button, THAT is actually where you type in the email address 😅 Then you'll get a code to sign in and should see your progress reflected on the curriculum.

I really do think this time it'll work. I was searching the forum to see if anyone encountered the same issue, and found that a camper recorded a walkthrough video, showing a very similar issue and how to solve it. I got the solution from his video, so credit where it's due.

But if it doesn't work for you, please open the browser console (press F12) and take a screenshot if there's any error.

@RufusMcdoogan Hi, could you give us more info on the issue? Which sign in method did you use before and after the update? Could you log in? What did you see after you logged in?

The www.freecodecamp.org/username has temporary changed to www.freecodecamp.org/portfolio/username. The team is working to revert it.

@jacoblapenna Hi, there was a big update on FreeCodeCamp. this is the announcement post, if you missed it: https://forum.freecodecamp.org/t/10-major-freecodecamp-improvements-that-are-live-now/192130

The site now uses passwordless authentication for security reason. If you don't use incognito mode or have privacy settings that delete cookie often, then you should stay logged in.

About your progress, which site was it on, the www.freecodecamp.org or the beta.freecodecamp.org? The one on the main site is NOT lost. The one on beta, however, probably got deleted when the update went live.

Btw, which method did you use to sign in? What did you see after logging in?

@huyenltnguyen Thanks for the link, it was informative and I'm excited for the changes. I've always logged in via GitHub, and have never been on any "beta" form of the url (I viewed my history extensively and found all www.freecodecamp.org). I visited the walk through video you linked to and that thread has said the video's methods are no longer necessary and the "bug is now fixed". My email associated profile still appears as if I am a completely brand new user, however. Also, when attempting to re-associate my email with my account again, I correctly receive a message that my email is already associated with an account, though none of my profile data moved over with the email association (username, profile picture, calendar heat-map, etc). After signing in with my associated email and two-factor authentication, I saw a message page with a big button to go to the curriculum, which had zero challenges completed. In the upper right corner, I have a generic profile photo, and the curriculum and forum tab links. The FCC logo hyperlink in the upper left corner does not redirect to anything. I've also tried the learn.freecodecamp.org url as suggested in other threads on the FCC forum. I'm starting to think my countless hours of work are lost forever :(

@jacoblapenna Thanks for your reply.

If your progress was on www.freecodecamp.org, it's always there, not deleted or lost. If you notice, the curriculum now has its own page (learn.freecodecamp.org). This is to improve the performance. The 'lost progress' issue many users have experienced is the side effects of this migration and/or the change in authentication method. And once again, your progress is not lost. It's just not connected/ported from the 'www' to the 'learn' page, and the team is working on it.

I just want to clarify a few things before giving further advice:

  • I believe you logged in to the 'new' site via email, am I correct?
  • If yes, did you ever use that email address with freeCodeCamp before?
  • You said: "when attempting to re-associate my email with my account again..." What is "my account"? And how did you do it?

@jacoblapenna So I just took another dig in the forum, and I found this. It looks like you created a new account by accident. Please send an email to [email protected] with your account info (both github username and the email address you used to signed in to FreeCodeCamp).

@emdashv If the solution in my previous comment (https://github.com/freeCodeCamp/freeCodeCamp/issues/17317#issuecomment-394230082) doesn't work for you, please send an email to [email protected] with your account info (both github username and the email address you typed in).

Thanks for your diligence @huyenltnguyen, after also looking at the FCC forum, it appears that I actually created a brand new account somehow when I tried to associate my email. To answer your previous questions, the timeline went something like:

  1. Joined FCC years ago, completed 100 or so challenges and put it aside for a while
  2. Came back and purposely reset all my progress to make sure I didn't have any gaps in my education
  3. Started from challenge 0 and diligently completed 300+ challenges over a few months
  4. Came back to my laptop one day after I let its battery die, I restored chrome's last used tabs to get back on FCC where I left off and found all the links and menus were showing 404 errors
  5. Logged out and attempted to log back to see if this would fix the 404 errors to find out that authentication through GitHub was no longer supported and major updated to FCC had taken place in the few days I was offline
  6. Followed FCC instructions and links to "associate" my email with my FCC account
  7. Upon first login to new url and updated FCC I found all my progress gone, a generic profile picture and user information, and a long string of gibberish as my username
  8. Logged out and logged back in to see if anything changed, nothing did
  9. Read, searched, and asked here and on FCC forum, trying "hard refresh", double checking urls, etc
  10. Just to see what would happen, I tried re-associating my email with my account as described in step 6, this yielded an error message stating my email was already associated with an account (as I already did this in step 6 of this chronology)
  11. Someone on FCC forum told me to email the FCC team and be patient
  12. Emailed FCC team
  13. Commencing patience...

Hi @jacoblapenna and anyone else, Can you please send me an email mrugesh at freecodecamp dot org?

We'll fix it up for you.

@raisedadead, email sent... Thanks!

@raisedadead, thanks for the quick response! I can log in now and all my progress is back (except for challenges that must have been removed). However, it shows I have completed all the JavaScript Algorithms and Data Structures Projects but I have 0 of 6 certifications completed. How does one obtain a certificate once the required projects are finished within the new FCC? I definitely want to fill in the uncompleted gaps, but I don't see any "claim your certificate" steps like the old FCC had.

@jacoblapenna you can add the projects URL in the settings page and claim the certificates

@raisedadead Thanks for jumping in!
@jacoblapenna Glad you got your progress back! I believe none of the challenges was removed, we only moved them around into smaller sections.

I also lost some progress, I think after the update last night. I had 100% completed the Responsive Web Design exercises and projects and claimed my certificate. However, I couldn't view them because it said my profile was set to private (it wasn't). The forums suggested I log out and log back in, and when I logged back in my streak was 2 instead of 4, and all challenges, project links, and profile info I had filled out in the past couple days was reverted.

@rmbarley It sounds like you may have a duplicate account somewhere. Could you email me at [email protected] and reference this issue, with any email addresses you might have used in the past? I will dig in and try to sort things out.

@huyenltnguyen Thanks for your help on all of this. I sent the team an email.

I'm closing this issue as it has been resolved. Thank you for reporting and happy coding!
