Same problem on Windows using 5.6.0-beta.1
Hangouts doesn't work on Hangout and GMail services (same message than above).
Same Hangout account works in a standard browser.

I installed Franz 5.5.0 : it works. Then he asked me to update : it doesn't work anymore.
Temporary solution : disable beta updates in settings.

Same for me on macOS Catalina 10.15.7.
Hangouts service and Hangouts pane in Gmail service both work in Franz 5.5.0.
Neither Hangouts service nor Hangouts pane in Gmail service work in either Franz 5.6.0 or 5.6.1.
Hangouts service has 'experiencing slowness' message. Hangouts pane in Gmail service is blank.

It seems like an DNS issue. I saw one of this following request getting timed out (in the Network tab of developer tools of browser):
https://chat-pa.clients6.google.com/chat/v1/conversations/syncrecentconversations?key=XXX&reqId=XXX&alt=protojson

Pinging the domain failed:

It started working automatically after a while. (The resolved IP had changed)

Same problem here with Frantz 5.6.1 and Big Sur 11.0.1: Hangouts can't connect.

And Gmail attachments are not working, too.
