That is true.
Firefox OK, Safari OK, on Chrome 70.0.3538.77 and 70.0.3538.102 on macOS is not.

1. Check your development console for errors / warning
2. Load Chrome without third party extensions
3. Uninstall any version of Font Awesome installed on your system

Sorry, my fault
I forgot that I use a chrome extension called "Shut out", that remove no constructive comments on youtube and news sites. It looks like that last update started to remove comment icon from fontawesome as well.
