Fluentd-kubernetes-daemonset: Lots of backslashes in fluentd logs

I'm running fluentd on GKE and when I run kubectl logs fluentd I see lots of backslashes, for example:

What I eventually did was overwrite the kubernetes.conf file with this:

My fluentd daemonset is also named "fluentd". Perhaps this exclude line could be put in the image with env var?

So the problem is k8s generates fluentd logs to /var/log/containers and fluentd tails own log file, right?
If so, adding exclude parameter via envvar is good approach.
