Fenix: Disable remote font download and Javascript.

Created on 22 Aug 2020  ·  11Comments  ·  Source: mozilla-mobile/fenix

What is the user problem or growth opportunity you want to see solved?

Disabling remote font download is a good practice from a security view point and also disabling javascript. These features are available on the Firefox Focus and also were available on Firefox 68..
This features would be helpful if included in the settings menu.

Who will benefit from it?

All Firefox Users

Correct me if Im wrong, but versions of Firefox older than 79(68.11.0 or older) all had that feature to disable web fonts. This setting was available under settings> advanced> show web fonts. However, the newer update seems to be missing this feature. It is no longer avaliable under settings.

Can you eloborate on the difference between this issue and #11460? You closed your previous issue #14076.

Okay that post is from June. Apparently after the last update, on Aug 19, the "Web font download" was taken out.

However I wish I could delete issue #14076 since it's a feature request.

I don't understand what you mean. Yes, #11460 was opened in June, two months ago. And nothing was "taken out", this feature never existed in Fenix. #11460 is about implementing this and other options.

And still it's a duplicate of the mentioned issue and this one can be closed. It's probably your secret why you gave a bad reaction only because I asked what you mean with your previous comment since nothing what you wrote answered the question what the difference is between this issue and #11460.

You can see here #3457, an issue titled "Add options to disable fonts, pictures and JavaScript": this issue was pulled _into_ #11460 by this comment: https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/fenix/issues/3457#issuecomment-648472065. Therefore, #11460 tracks adding options to disable/enable fonts, pictures and JavaScript. I hope this makes things more clear :)

Should've looked that up before. Thank you (: However, I wonder why those features were removed, since version 68.11.0 had those features built in.

They haven't really been removed. Fenix is an entire rewrite of the browser around geckoview and some feature haven't been implemented yet.
Don't hesitate to ask for features if some are missing and not already tracked by an issue, the team is working hard to improve Fenix.

Not downloading fonts is (was!) a good bandwidth saver.

Face it, pushing a non feature complete partial rewrite as a live stable update is,sadly, a rod for your own back.

Get used to feedback like "put back the features you shouldn't have released withou"

Going to close for #11460 . Thanks!
