Esmvaltool: Dates for the next (virtual) ESMValTool Workshop - May 4 to May 6

Created on 4 Mar 2021  Β·  27Comments  Β·  Source: ESMValGroup/ESMValTool

Hey all,
we have decided to have another virtual ESMValTool Workshop in spring 2021, and so we are trying to find dates that would work for most people. We had indicated in the March ESMValTool Meeting that we would hold the Workshop at the beginning of May, and there were no objections.
So here is the doodle where you can indicate your preferred dates for the Workshop at the beginning of May:
https://terminplaner4.dfn.de/MVLWMi6KFchU2AXW

Please indicate your preference in the doodle latest by March 19, 2021.

Hey @ESMValGroup/esmvaltool-developmentteam,
it was great to see many of you at the workshop this week!
We will write a summary of the workshop and will post it on the ESMValTool webpage soon.

We also recorded some of the discussions and the presentations. If you would like to access these, please let @hb326 and @bettina-gier know.

Until next time!

@ESMValGroup/esmvaltool-developmentteam: just a reminder that you should indicate your availability for the next (virtual) ESMValTool workshop here if you want to make sure that your availability is considered. Deadline for the poll is this Friday!

Here is a list of topics that have been proposed for discussion at the workshop:

  • Making IPCC AR6 recipes available in ESMValTool, see #2068
  • Improving automated testing of diagnostics, proposed by @nielsdrost during the last monthly meeting
  • @jvegasbsc Proposed switching from semantic versioning to calendar based versioning (e.g. instead of v2.3 the next release would be called v2021.6 for the 6th month of the year 2021) in #2064

I'd be interested to talk about performance and https://github.com/ESMValGroup/ESMValCore/issues/674.

Hey all @ESMValGroup/esmvaltool-developmentteam,
we have fixed the dates for the workshop: May 4 to May 6 2021!
So put those dates on your calendar.
If you have any suggestions on what you would want to report on, what you would like to talk about, what you would like to have discussed, please comment on this issue here so that we can collect the ideas/suggestions. We will then put together an agenda in the second half of April.

The format of the workshop will most likely be like the last time: a common meeting in the morning with specified topics that are discussed, then everybody is working individually on his/her own project, then again a common meeting in the late afternoon to report on progress and problems. There will be an option on having informal coffee breaks with people, and there is of course the possibility for smaller side meetings.

Some more topics for discussion

  • @jvegasbsc suggested discussing if it is still safe to include new NCL diagnostics/cmorizers #1057
  • @nielsdrost suggested having a look at how we can make our linting and automatic formatting more developer-friendly

Some more suggestions for workshop topics:
Pull requests related to the 4th ESMValTool paper, which are:

  • Updates for figures for recipe_flato13ipcc.yml, pull request TBD
  • New recipe recipe_pv_capacity_factor.yml, pull request TBD, branch: https://github.com/ESMValGroup/ESMValTool/tree/pvcf_gmddraft
  • Smaller changes, which should be updated in recipes and/or the documentation:

    • Update for outdated link to reference DΓ©andreis et al. (2014), pull request #2076

    • Others I'll add soon

I would be happy to take part in the IS-ENES3 side meeting on Tuesday, addressing WP9 task 5 in relation to issues #2041, #1086 and #1086. But I welcome other opportunities to have this IS-ENES3-related discussion if irrelevant on Tuesday.
I would welcome details on how to join.

Can we add a quick planning session for the June release as well?

I'd like to propose a high-level discussion on where ESMValTool is heading to in the future - something that ties in with the governance as well as long-term plans for the tool's development, deployment and most importantly its use by the community. Can we accommodate such a thing?

speaking of governance, I don't see an update on it in the schedule, I reckon it's high noon for it to happen - can @alistairsellar @hb326 give us a heads up please?

Hi @senesis, you are welcome to join the IS-ENES3 side meeting on Tuesday. This is part of serie of ~monthly 30min-meetings where we review the status of the WP9 tasks and discuss general issues. We usually do not have time to go deep into code development issues but you could let us know the problems you are facing. Nevertheless, there will be plenty of opportunities during the workshop to set up side discussions between interested developpers to discuss given issues. The link to join the workshop will be posted later today. The same link can be used for the IS-ENES3 side meeting.

I think that is already in the schedule:
5 May 2021 - Day 2
02.30 pm – 03.00 pm Introduction of new teams and future strategy (Alistair)

Hey @zklaus, do you want a specific side meeting for the release discussion? Or do you think it would work if you just chat about that in the meeting room when we have no other meeting going on, at a time that works for the involved people?

Hey @valeriupredoi, @remi-kazeroni is correct, the update to the governance will be discussed on May 5 in the afternoon. We could extend the time for this a bit, if you think that is necessary.

@hb326, I think a side meeting would be good. Basically, the idea is to fulfill step 8 in the release timeline, somehow combined with step 1.

@zklaus: ok.
Would Wednesday from 11.30 am to 12.30 pm work for that?

Perfect! This way we can fill the milestone before (let's make an announcement at the beginning of the workshop), discuss then and start working on it the rest of the time. :+1:

@hb326 @remi-kazeroni cool stuff! But 30min to discuss governance and future strategy is a wee bit too little I reckon. I'd like to present a couple (as in, really, just 2) slides and start us thinking what we need to do in the immediate future as well, if that'd be possible. also, this discussion don't have to be with everyone so we don't bore the ones that are not interested

Just wanted to let you know, I'll be joining on the 4th for the IPCC discussion, on the 6th for the general discussion and may be for the social event 🍻 πŸ˜‰ Just wanted to ask, please, do not start the IPCC discussion earlier than announced (6:30 am start of the day is harsh 😴)

I also was wondering, if there is any chance to record on the day 2 11.30 am – 12.30 pm B discussion, as well as 2pm to 3pm and 3pm to 3:30 pm talks, it would be wonderful. If you could also record 2:30 to 3pm talk on day 3 would be great as well! (Sorry, if it's too much to ask!) Thanks a lot in advance!
