Esmvaltool: Website TLS version is out of date

Created on 18 Jul 2020  路  7Comments  路  Source: ESMValGroup/ESMValTool

I recently visited https://www.esmvaltool.org/ , and Firefox (version 78) refused to load the webpage; its error message suggests the TLS version is too old, i.e., version 1.1 or 1.0. These two version have been deprecated in 2020. Chrome (version 84) does load the page, but shows a "Not Secure" indication, even if the URL starts with https.

Probably, the webserver software needs an update.

Side note: the main ESMValGroup GitHub page has a link to http://www.esmvaltool.org instead of the https version, but the former redirects to the latter (and consequently consequently fails in Firefox).

Just updated the ESMValGroup URL from http to https and inquired with our it department about the possibility of updating the TLS version used by esmvaltool.org.

@axel-lauer Any news from the IT department?

It's still on their radar but more urgent tasks are keeping them busy at least all of September... I will inquire again early October just to make sure they did not forget.

ping the DLR IT geeks via @axel-lauer

The update had been scheduled for yesterday but then had to be postponed. Hoping this will take place soon...

they're watching the US Eelections, don't get fooled they're busy
