Element-web: Inconsistent IRC nick display

Description

While in IRC rooms (on the element web app, android app or linux app), the nicks of matrix users display inconsistently.

Steps to reproduce

Log on to multiple element sessions (I use element web on one PC, linux app on another, and android app on my phone) and enter the same IRC room. On some sessions a matrix user might display as "nick (user_name:matrix.org)" and in other sessions the same user might display as just "nick".

The issue is inconsistent between sessions and, within a session, inconsistent between users. So on a single session, one matrix user might display the short nick and another user might display the long version. Between sessions a given user might display as short on one session and long on another.

I would expect that in an IRC room, all users should display their nick only within the conversation, with full details available when hovering over their avatar.

Try clear client cache in Settings > Help & About

The appended bit in brackets is for disambiguation if there are multiple people with the same displayname. Sometimes it gets stuck.

That works in web and Linux apps. On Android Settings>General>Clear Cache sorts it. Seems like a bit of a workaround but I suppose it resolves the immediate issue.

Do I have to just keep doing this every time it gets messed up or might there be some longer-term actual solution?

It gets messed up quite a lot. I've deleted my cache quite a few times today.
