Element-web: ux: more compact layout needed
Description
A real compact layout mode is needed for power users, one that would maximize the information displayed on screen. This is important especially for promoting Riot as an usable alternative for IRC users which are used to simple text layouts.
I included an annotated screenshot that compares Riot interface with the one from Textual compact layout. Still same would apply for lots of irc clients as the setup is pretty standard.

Still a need post 1.0. On small screens room list entries have a lot of whitespace which combined with the categories makes a usability issue where finding entries requires lots of scrolling:

improvements in the information heirarchy mentioned in https://github.com/vector-im/riot-web/issues/8042#issuecomment-510809371 should help with busy room lists
