@begrafx Can delete your _vendor_ directory and _composer.lock_ file, add the Drupal Console require to your _composer.json_ followed by running _$ composer install_. That is what helped me solving this problem.

I'm confused. This issue points to #3895 and #3895 points...HERE. Both have been closed and neither offer solutions.

@begrafx Can delete your _vendor_ directory and _composer.lock_ file, add the Drupal Console require to your _composer.json_ followed by running _$ composer install_. That is what helped me solving this problem.

I tried the @mikewink solution, and it works. Thanks.
Versions:
Drupal version : 8.5.3 and 8.5.4
PHP version: 7.2.5

Solved it only removed the symfony/dom-crawler and composer.lock, then run composer require drupal/console:~1.8.0 --prefer-dist --optimize-autoloader. And installed the drupal console and dependencies. Drupal 8.6.0 php 7.29.

I solved it by adding "drupal/console": "~1.0" in the require section and running composer update - hope this helps.

This still occurs with a fresh Drupal 8.6.3 install. The docs should reflect this.. had to jump through hoops.

@mikewink it works for me thanks :).

I got this today with 8.6.7. Deleted composer.lock and vendor/, ran composer clear-cache and composer install and it works.

This was a fresh site, so I'm not too concerned about changes to the dependencies.

Thanks for the suggestions here.

I solved it by adding "drupal/console": "~1.0" in the require section and running composer update - hope this helps.
@nidash
Same here the only solution that worked was adding "drupal/console": "~1.0" to composer.json and run composer update --with-dependencies

I solved it by adding "drupal/console": "~1.0" in the require section and running composer update - hope this helps.

Excellent workaround for now! Thanks @nidash

Thanks @nidash
It's solved the problem for me.

Yep fixed it for me too

I didn't want our students to modify composer.json manually, this command also got console working:
composer require drupal/console:~1.0 symfony/finder:v3.4.27 symfony/debug:v3.4.27 symfony/filesystem:v3.4.27

Note: it is also fixing the versions of symfony/finder, s/debug, and s/filesystem to earlier versions, which is likely not desirable. Editing the .json file directly (as described above) is slightly more difficult but has a slightly better outcome.

Hi @ashabed the solution provided by @RishiKulshreshtha, @phannphong and @sphism is as is documented on https://docs.drupalconsole.com/en/getting/composer.html

Could you let me know how do you ended up with a different version in composer, maybe is outdated documentation that you find that we need to fix?

After deleting Vendor directory and Composer.lock file, it worked for me!

Thanks !

Drupal 8.7.2
after:

  1. installing Drush:9 version (deleting Drush:8 version first)
  2. deleting Vendor and composer.lock file and
  3. run ashabed's command (composer require drupal/console:~1.0 symfony/finder:v3.4.27 symfony/debug:v3.4.27 symfony/filesystem:v3.4.27)

it worked!

Thanks all

I had to:
delete the symfony/dom-crawler from composer.json require section
add drupal/console:~1.0 to composer.json require section
delete vendor directory
run composer update
most likely I could have left off version for console. However I'm not touching it now!

Manually adding "drupal/console": "^1.0" to the require section of the projects' composer.json followed by a composer update worked for me, but, not without downgrading symfony/finder and symfony/dom-crawler:

  • Downgrading symfony/finder (v4.3.2 => v3.4.29): Loading from cache
    [...]
  • Downgrading symfony/dom-crawler (v4.3.2 => v3.4.29): Loading from cache

This is on a clean Drupal 8.7.4 installation. What could be the implications of this and more importantly, why does drupal/console v1.9.0 requires symfony/dom-crawler ~2.8|~3.0 ? can this be changed to work with ~4.0?

Currently using a fresh install of D8.8.1 and experiencing the same issues: cannot install because symfony/finder version too high (from site install).
apparatchiki's comment of removing vendor and composer.lock file, then running the drupal console require command installs Drupal Console and then rest of the site requirements by downgrading symfony/finder

Potential causes:
 - A typo in the package name
 - The package is not available in a stable-enough version according to your minimum-stability setting
   see <https://getcomposer.org/doc/04-schema.md#minimum-stability> for more details.
 - It's a private package and you forgot to add a custom repository to find it

Read <https://getcomposer.org/doc/articles/troubleshooting.md> for further common problems.

Installation failed, reverting ./composer.json to its original content.

@jmevalentin did you try the @nidash's way?

I solved it by adding "drupal/console": "~1.0" in the require section and running composer update - hope this helps.

The following worked for me without having to delete the composer.lock file or anything from the vendor folder

composer require "symfony/dom-crawler:~2.8|~3.0" drupal/console --dev --prefer-dist --optimize-autoloader --update-with-all-dependencies

This issue has been driving me mad!

  1. Had to delete composer.lock file from install dir - I just moved them into a spare folder I use to move files/folders I don't want to delete.
  2. Had to delete vendor folder.
  3. Add "drupal/console": "~1.0" in the require section of composer.json file.
  4. composer update.
  5. composer clear cache.
  6. run following command as none of the others worked (thanks robert-duplock-adg):
    $ composer require "symfony/dom-crawler:~2.8|~3.0" drupal/console --dev --prefer-dist --optimize-autoloader --update-with-all-dependencies
    Finally flipping worked!

I tried that composer command in step 6, @anjinesie , but I get this:

Hi @jmevalentin. I installed Drupal Console (DC) on an already installed drupal site (albeit more or less fresh - installed using 'composer...recommended project' - re-configured as I am on a shared hosting server - pain in the a£*e). Is your site already installed using 'composer...recommended project' or are you installing DC using 'composer create-project \drupal-composer/drupal-project:8.x-dev'?
Because of the shared hosting limitations using the public_html folder as the [web-root] instead of the already configured 'web' folder, I had to install DC to my site root [cpanel home folder] first using #6 after removing vendor folder and the composer.lock file from site root [cpanel home folder]. If your set up is similar (shared hosting) then I can let you know what I did to get everything working.

I am also using the drupal recommended template and drupal 8.8.5 as well, and I was running into the same issues. My recipe to work around this problem was slightly different:

  • delete composer.lock and vendor folder
  • composer self-update (to 1.10)
  • fin composer require drupal/console --prefer-dist --optimize-autoloader

Is there a solution without deleting composer.lock ?

Hi @ashabed the solution provided by @RishiKulshreshtha, @phannphong and @sphism is as is documented on https://docs.drupalconsole.com/en/getting/composer.html

Could you let me know how do you ended up with a different version in composer, maybe is outdated documentation that you find that we need to fix?

@enzolutions, this issue is not documented at the referenced address

also, attempting that solution downgraded symfony: Downgrading symfony/finder (v4.4.8 => v3.4.40): Loading from cache
I don't think that's what I want.

@spiritcapsule try this
add "drupal/console": "~1.0" to composer.json and run composer update --with-dependencies

I am no expert but I have managed to set up drupal console successfully on three different sites using the following. You have to install drupal console DC inside your cPanel root folder and your web root ('public_html' or 'web')! This is what I was getting wrong!
You also need to delete/move the Vendor folder as this contains the conflicting Symfony files DC wil not install if you don't do this - but on a re-run of the install (below) this will correct to the latest version. I hope it helps you, please let me know how you get on.

I assuming you have installed Drupal -recommended project and Composer!!

I installed DC with this command using Composer into my cPanel root (aroot) FIRST e.g. my cPanel folder structure is: aroot/public_html/sites.
_1. Create a 'spare' dir inside aroot folder.

  1. Move composer.lock file from aroot folder to spare folder (to keep just in case).
  2. Move Vendor folder from aroot folder in to spare folder (to keep just in case).
  3. Make sure "drupal/console": "~1.0" in the 'require' section of composer.json file which will look something like this!_
"require-dev": {
"drupal/console": "^1.9"
}

___5. Run_
composer update
_6. Run_
composer clear-cache

  1. Install DrupalConsole into aroot folder using following command:_
    composer require "symfony/dom-crawler:~2.8|~3.0" drupal/console --dev --prefer-dist --optimize-autoloader --update-with-all-dependencies_

_7a. Then re-run (in aroot folder) as (this seems to install the correct version of Symfony or something or other - not entirely sure what happens but when I omitted this step - I had a whole bunch of errors):_
composer require drupal/console --dev --prefer-dist --optimize-autoloader --update-with-all-dependencies

_8. Now install DrupalConsole into ~/public_html or ~/web [web-root] folder using command:_
composer require drupal/console --dev --prefer-dist --optimize-autoloader --update-with-all-dependencies

_9. Next install Launcher:_
php -r "readfile('https://drupalconsole.com/installer');" > drupal.phar

_8. Move drupal.phar to aroot directory and rename (substitute for your folder structure):_
mv drupal.phar home/aroot/drupal

_9. Change permissions for drupal.phar directory:_
chmod +x /home/aroot/drupal

_10. Go to aroot folder and check version of drupal console installed:_
composer show | grep drupal/console

_It will look something like this:_

[aroot@vps ~]$ composer show | grep drupal/console
drupal/console 1.9.4 The Drupal CLI. A tool to generate boile...
drupal/console-core                          1.9.4           Drupal Console Core
drupal/console-en 1.9.4 Drupal Console English Language
drupal/console-extend-plugin 0.9.3 Drupal Console Extend Plugin

_11. If its all installed properly then you can delete the spare folder._

Is it possible to require and update only this one dependency via composers require drupal/console, or do I need to add it manually and run an update on it? I ask because the site I'm working on appears to be screwed up, and just running composer update right now will bring it down. Whoever created this site screwed it up something royally, so we're having to figure out stuff manually. In the meantime, I'm missing out on Drupal console.

Is DC installed in the cPanel root and the webroot? Drupal Console seems to only want to install with a specific version of symfony! I found that's why i was getting errors!

@acnimda I did exactly that and as stated previously ended with Symfony 3. I had Symfony 4 before attempting to add Console.

Could you get full throttle of the Drupal Console? If you can run drupal it would be more than delightful.

Composer is a great dependencies manager and will do the work for you. I don't have an answer why there is in your situation a downgrade.

You don't have to delete composer.lock or what so ever.

I use it a lot on a windows host, with docker and DDEV and never really had any issues with Drupal Console.

Is there a solution without deleting composer.lock ?

I agree with this.
Its actually works with vendor/.lock deletion and composer update,
BUT in a context of automatic deployment and continuous integration we simply can't remove composer.lock and change vendor versions in different environments.
We must keep the same composer.json and lock.

i had the same issue with drupal 8.9.x @nidash solution works fine. Thanx!

I have experienced the same issue and @mikewink solution works.
