Doom-emacs: Error with autoloads

Created on 4 Jan 2018  Â·  17Comments  Â·  Source: hlissner/doom-emacs

I'm running into issues getting make autoloads to work on Windows. I know this isn't supported but I have been able to run this up to version 2.0.8 but not with 2.0.9 or develop. Is there something obvious that you think might have changed to make it stop working? The error I'm getting is:

Error in autoloads.el: (nil nil ...) wrong-type-argument -- Wrong type argument: stringp, nil

I have tried to debug the issue but I'm not sure what the best way to go about it for async commands such as this.

Output from make doctor is:

@teesloane I am aware of this one and know what causes it (a few causes, actually). Instead of addressing it, I'm focusing on the new popup system, which will be up later tonight and will invalidate the issue altogether. Thanks for letting me know though!

It looks like some errant code made its way into your autoloads file. If make is throwing errors, try deleting %EMACS.D%/.local/autoloads.el and then running make again.

Oh, it just occurred to me you may not have easy access to a bash-esque terminal (or make), so here's an alternative (if you can get into Emacs): run M-x eval-expression RET (delete-file doom-autoload-file) then M-x doom//reload-autoloads.

Thanks very much for the help. I actually do have bash style commandline and have access to make via msys2. I made sure to remove %EMACS.D%/.local/autoloads.el and reran make (and make autoloads) but to no avail. The only way I can get it to work again is to checkout the 2.0.8 tag (git checkout tags/v2.0.8).

If there isn't any obvious changes that you think would be affecting it, I will try a few other things and see if I can make any headway.

I cannot think of any. But here are two things that could help me diagnose this:

  1. Could you send me your autoloads.el file so I can examine it?
  2. Can you run Emacs in debug mode (emacs --debug-init)? This should hopefully evoke a backtrace at the point of the error. If it does, please include all of its output.

There isn't much to the autoloads file but here it is:

;;; autoloads.el --- automatically extracted autoloads
;;
;;; Code:

(provide 'autoloads)
;; Local Variables:
;; version-control: never
;; no-byte-compile: t
;; no-update-autoloads: t
;; coding: utf-8
;; End:
;;; autoloads.el ends here

Here's the output when I set emacs --debug-init in the makefile:

In core/core-packages.el line 570, could you change the following:

     (file-relative-name file doom-emacs-dir)))
 (make-directory (file-name-directory doom-autoload-file) t)
-(let ((buf (get-file-buffer doom-autoload-file))
+(let ((buf (find-file-noselect doom-autoload-file t))

Then try make a again and let me know if that resolves your issue.

EDIT: Removed the third argument to find-file-noselect

Yes that worked perfectly, thank you! It's all working great now and I have the latest greatest doom at my fingertips. :-)

Curious though, is your autoload still empty after running make a?

Also, whoops, i put the wrong issue id on that commit, derp.

Phew! Good to hear. Then I'll consider this resolved.

EDIT: I'll leave this open until it hits master.

On an unrelated note, if you have a lot of output to share in a github issue, you wrap them in:

<details>
  <summary>Click here to expand</summary>

A lot of text here (can be markdown).
</details>

And you'll get a nifty expandable (Sorry if you already know this!):

They put me in the oven to bake.
Me, a deprived and miserable cake.
Feeling the heat, I started to bubble.
Watching the others, I knew I was in trouble.

They opened the door and I started my life.
Frosting me with a silver knife,
Decorating me with candy jewels.
The rest of my batch looked like fools.

Lifting me up, she took off my wrapper.
Feeling the breeze, I wanted to slap her.
Opening her mouth with shiny teeth inside,
This was the day this cupcake died.

Thanks didn't know that, very nifty!

👋

I just did a bit of updating myself, and have run into an issue on the lastest version of develop. After running make clean, and make install, disabling my packages this appears on boot:

image

@hlissner I noticed you mentioning in #325 that an overhaul of the popup system is coming. I'm back on master and all is good, but I thought this might help you catch some extra bugs if they're still around. If you need me to return to develop to do some debugging (to the best of my emacs-ability) I'd be happy to!

Best!

T

@teesloane I am aware of this one and know what causes it (a few causes, actually). Instead of addressing it, I'm focusing on the new popup system, which will be up later tonight and will invalidate the issue altogether. Thanks for letting me know though!

Awesome! I'm excited for the new release!

I'll close this since the original issue has been resolved (and we're really close to merging into master).

@teesloane Are you still getting that recursive load issue, now that the new popup system is in place?

Haven't seen a recursive load error in a long time !
