dep init hangs for hours

What version of dep are you using (dep version)?

Tested on the brew version:

dep:
 version     : v0.5.0
 build date  : 2018-07-26
 git hash    : 224a564
 go version  : go1.10.3
 go compiler : gc
 platform    : darwin/amd64
 features    : ImportDuringSolve=false

And pulled from tip and compiled today:

dep:
 version     : devel

 go compiler : gc
 platform    : darwin/amd64

What dep command did you run?

dep init -v

I was initialising a new project, not many dependencies but it does include some large ones like Docker and Vault. The init was taking a while so I decided to just leave it running, turns out it ran for 6 hours and got nowhere!

Yep, there are some projects that dep makes some poor decisions on, and it can run for some time. Some of the Hashicorp projects in particular, due to their circular dependencies.

There's a change coming in the next release of dep that is likely to help with this quite a bit.

Ah, amending - next major release of dep, v0.6.0, will address this. v0.5.1 is smaller bugfixes.

Is there a workaround for the time being?

Having the same issue right now with some of the hashicorp stuff. The behaviour that I observe is that dep is totally hung after some time (no network and no cpu usage). The verbose output is not too helpful either here. Any clue or workaround for this?
