Data.table: R data.table compiled installation failing: Error: shared object ‘datatable.so’ not found

I'm installing R on a new laptop (no migration from a previous laptop or OS version). R 4.0.1 installed fine.

Seems fine. But when I load it:

I want to use multiple cores so I go to the suggested web page above and follow instructions there. I do all three steps and they all seem to work (no error messages).

install command line tools with "xcode-select --install"
install Brew and then "brew update && brew install llvm"
finally create and edit "~/.R/Makevars" as suggested.

At this point I go back and try installing data.table and compiling it with:

I used remove.packages() to get rid of the old (non-parallel) version of data.table.
did your "brew install pkg-config" with no errors.
Used my original Makevars (below) including LLVM (not gcc)
did your install.packages() which resulted in:

Thank you for reporting.
I think we cannot be ultimately sure that installation fails due to missing (or not found) zlib, but of course it seems to be the cause here.
If so, then ideally would be to just disable fwrite compression when zlib is not present.
What we could do as a first step, is to provide a #define NOZLIB in fwrite C file, so we can easily switch between a version of the package that support fwrite compression and the other that doesn't. Then we can also easily provide such branch for testing to users like @hadleyjohnson

in ~/.R/Makevars add -DNOZLIB to your CFLAGS
try installing nozlib branch, remotes::install_github("Rdatatable/data.table@nozlib")
if installation succeed then confirm the following command raises exception about missing zlib: data.table::fwrite(iris, file="a.zip", compress="gzip")

I needed to install the githubinstall package first. That worked.
Then I did your steps 1 and 2.
The installation did not work. I get the same error as before:

Inspired by the reply of @csdaw concerning another compilation-related issue #4581, I finally managed to get the installation working by installing pkg-config:

brew install pkg-config

Also, I used gcc rather than LLVM, but I'm not sure whether this is critical. My Makevars looks like this:
