Dash-to-dock: Dash to dock causes crash/lags in GNOME 3.36

On Arch Linux and dash-to-dock built from gnome-3-36 branch, I experience some random crashes and lags after a while. Looking at journalctl, I find a series of errors such as below:

Mar 12 21:21:21 desktop gnome-shell[1382]: Attempting to run a JS callback during garbage collection. This is most likely caused by destroying a Clutter actor or GTK widget with ::destroy signal connected, or using the destroy(), dispose(), or remove() vfuncs. Because it would crash the application, it has been blocked.

Outside of one extension (User themes) shipped with gnome-shell-extensions, dash-to-dock is the only extension enabled on my machine.

First you need to remove your current Dash to Dock extension.
Then run these commands in your terminal:

git clone --branch gnome-3-36 https://github.com/micheleg/dash-to-dock.git
cd ./dash-to-dock
make
make install

Logout and then log back in.

Can't say for sure it works for you. But it works for me.

Using dash-to-dock from tmp/gnome-3.36, I am getting the following messages:

It crashes a lot less often now, though I have encountered two crashes since I built off the latest gnome-3-36 branch.

I've attached the journalctl logs which I think may be relevant.

@yookoala what do you mean branch? I've git cloned the repo make installed it from there and it won't work at all on Fedora 32 beta. I've seen "gnome 3.36 branch" mentioned a lot here, but I don't see a clear indication on github as to what/where that is.

I experienced the same issue when migrating to gnome 3.34 back in the days, and now with 3.36 update.

I created an issue on gnome-shell side (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/2456), in order to at least have an automatic fallback when an extension crashes, but it seems it's not possible due to the way extensions are designed to hook up in gnome-shell.

So, could we avoid this happening again in the future? (for 3.38 for example).

Would it be possible for dash-to-dock to checks some requirements when it starts, so that if they aren't met (like when migrating from 3.34 to 3.36, or any next update), it would disable itself, and let the shell start up correctly?

What do you think?

(yes, I know it's fixed in the 3.36 branch, but I'm speaking about putting in place a mechanism to prevent this to ever happen again with graceful fallback).

First you need to remove your current Dash to Dock extension.
Then run these commands in your terminal:

git clone --branch gnome-3-36 https://github.com/micheleg/dash-to-dock.git
cd ./dash-to-dock
make
make install

Logout and then log back in.

Can't say for sure it works for you. But it works for me.

Hello,
I've been using dash-to-dock from gnome-3-36 branch for a week now, and there were no errors like before.
(There is still the problem of not being able to move icons when the dock is in the bottomof the screen, but this should be tracked on another issue.)
AFAIC this issue can be closed.

I think your question should be tracked on its own issue, since it is kind of a feature request about fallbacks on shell updates and not about the specific problems detailed on this issue.
But this is only my opinion and I am not involved on this repo. I'll let the maintainer decide.
