Its unneccesary, you can easily get latest development build, and making stable-build every week too diffucult - do you remenber how long was freezing 0.1 stable?
I am talking about minor updates. as on Appveyor. an exit every Sunday comes out for example.
There's not much point, since Appveyor will build as soon as a commit is made or a PR is opened.
Could it be that the opening post proposes that a dialog is added to Cxbx-Reloaded GUI, which notifies the end user once a week when a new build is available?
Honestly, I don't like "phone home" on any unofficial programs even for experimental build too.
I believe there is a policy in some countries for not allowing to "phone home" similar way of auto-subscribe to email for certain countries. Unless user themselves are aware want to subscribe/check for update.
If include an option via GUI to turn it on (disable by default), then I am fine with it.

Alternatively, we could add just a menu item to open the download page, without any automation or schedule. Let the user choose when to select it.
