ya I finally figured out what to do thanks to Dennis if anybody wants all you have to do is change Xorg to xiwi
this will change it back to xorg
sudo sh crouton -t xorg,xiwi -u -n chrootname
and this will change it this xiwi
sudo crouton -t xiwi -u -n chrootname
then wait for it to change then do
sudo startxfce4

tranks yall
peace yall

 /mnt/stateful_partition/crouton/chroots/xenial/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-crouton.conf.bak

and then start crouton

@pairwiserr What does this do and why will it fix things?

@Alizter Please confirm that this file even exists for you else disregard my solution.

The command above simply renames the file 20-crouton.conf to 20-crouton.conf.bak. I ran into a similar issue when I had 20-crouton.conf in my xorg configuration folder .../xorg.conf.d.

My 20-crouton.conf file is as follows

# Copyright (c) 2016 The crouton Authors. All rights reserved.
# Use of this source code is governed by a BSD-style license that can be
# found in the LICENSE file.

# On Intel platforms with FBC enabled, in order to see anything we need to use

     Driver     "intel"
     Option     "AccelMethod" "sna"
     Option     "TearFree"    "true"
EndSection

You seem to be on an Asus C302 (Cave) machine which is similar to mine, Samsung Chromebook Pro (Caroline). Both machines default to using sna acceleration method but line TearFree "true" might be causing the segmentation fault.

Also. I just saw that you're trying to use bionic chroot (18.04) for your crouton but your crouton is trying to enter your xenial chroot... Did you go through guide?

@pairwiserr I have unfortunately powerwashed and reinstalled crouton with a bionic build. Occasionally on xorg I still crash however. If it happens again I will document it again.

I looked for your file but I couldn't find it. I only have

10-evdev.conf  10-quirks.conf  11-evdev-quirks.conf  11-evdev-trackpoint.conf  50-synaptics.conf  50-wacom.conf  51-synaptics-quirks.conf

in that directory. My current temporary solution is to use xiwi instead. Sometimes I can free up a lot more memory to make it run faster especially if I kill processes like chrome ppa pepper flash or something.

What I am doing is probably super sketchy but it might help. At first the chromebook looks like it is frozen but it wakes up shortly after.

I had none of these problems a few updates back. I am not sure when but a chromeos update has broken everything. Not to mention memory usage seems to be a lot higher.

@Alizter

I looked for your file but I couldn't find it. I only have...

Yep, that's normal. For your reference 20-crouton.conf is a copy of /mnt/stateful_partition/crouton/chroots/xenial/etc/crouton/xorg-intel-sna.conf

I've been having a lot of issues with the recent update as well. If you want to stop auto-update follow these instructions.

Relevant part:

A simple way would be to remove or rename /etc/init/update-engine.conf which would prevent the updater from ever running.

/etc/init/update-engine.conf can be accessed from the console from _ChromeOS_ - not inside crouton.

Edit: I've heard that you have to do some additional work to get bionic working. If you don't need features from bionic, I recommend using xenial as it has a lot more support on here.

@pairwiserr Thanks for that link! Do you know if crouton is going to be updated to work on newer versions of chromeos? There doesn't look to be much development activity going on here.

@Alizter I'm not certain as it's not officially supported by Google. But I don't think crouton is going anywhere any time soon seeing that Crostini still has a lot of functionalities missing.

Sometimes CrOS updates can cause issues with crouton, when that happens the best course of action is to update your chroot(s). See the below for help with that:

Closing. Please re-open if this issue is still a concern.

Not sure if the same issue, but I am also getting a segmentation fault everytime i try to enter my chroot with sudo startxfce4 This started a few weeks ago and I have already updated my chroot multiple times but still getting the same error.

Here's the error I get:

@raffytaruc I am also still getting seg faults. My solution for now has been running crouton with xiwi instead.

@DennisLfromGA Can you reopen this issue, it definitely has not been resolved, I am really confused why you closed it.

Thanks!

Your welcome; I'm not quite sure why I closed it either.
Just holler at me like you did when that happens and I'll jump on it.

-DennisLfromGA

After some trial and error, I was able to sudo startxfce4 into my chroot without crashing by doing either of the following first:

Remove or rename /mnt/stateful_partition/crouton/chroots/xenial/etc/X11/xorg.conf
(This was a copy of /etc/crouton/xorg-intel-sna.conf which I created before to force graphics acceleration) This is similar to the recommendation of @pairwiserr above.

OR

Edit /mnt/stateful_partition/crouton/chroots/xenial/etc/X11/xorg.conf and set the TearFree option to false

This feels more like a workaround though. While I am able to enter my chroot now and carry out everyday tasks (browsing, writing code), the performance when doing something more graphics intensive (playing games) has been quite bad compared to before.

I just downloaded it about 3-4 days ago and I am having the same problems as is shown before. I am kind of new so please if you can help explain it.

@shmoob My current solution is to use xiwi and crouton integration. I just use the crouton terminal and start all my applications in chromeos windows using xiwi.

ok

@Alizter
how do you exactly do that

@shmoob First you will want to run crouton -u -t xiwi from the crosh shell. This will add the "xiwi" target to the crouton environment. Now instead of running crouton normally, use sudo enter-chroot. This will enter your crouton but only at the terminal level. Run xiwi to check that you have it installed, now when you want to start an application such as firefox, you would write xiwi firefox &. The & makes the job run in the background.

By the way this only works if you have the chrouton integration extension for chrome.

here are some more details:
https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton/wiki/crouton-in-a-Chromium-OS-window-(xiwi)

ok thanks

@Alizter
when I try the first command from the crosh shell it says command not found.

What @shmoob exactly did you do?

I typed crouton -u -t xiwi and it said

@Alizter

@shmoob Like when you previously tried to run crouton, you need to be in shell mode. So just type shell into crosh and you should be in the chrome os shell.

ok thanks

but still

@Alizter

@shmoob So you've probably only run crouton from the script. You will need to install it. Read the instructions here:

https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton/blob/master/README.md

ok thanks

@Alizter
I tried to do it and nothing happened

The xiwi xmethod is a good alternative to xorg, especially in these situations.

Now instead of running crouton normally, use sudo enter-chroot. This will enter your crouton but only at the terminal level. Run xiwi to check that you have it installed, now when you want to start an application such as firefox, you would write xiwi firefox &. The & makes the job run in the background.

Well, that's one way to do it but you can still use the start* scripts from outside your chroot.
See the below for some examples:

  • Start your desktop in a window: sudo startxfce4 -n xenial -X xiwi
  • Start your desktop full screen : sudo startxfce4 -n xenial -X xiwi-fullscreen
  • Start your desktop in a tab : sudo startxfce4 -n xenial -X xiwi-tab
  • Start your desktop using xorg : sudo startxfce4 -n xenial -X xorg

You can also use the startxiwi script to launch Linux apps like the following:

  • Start your app in a window: sudo startxiwi -n xenial xterm
  • Start your app full screen : sudo startxiwi -n xenial -F xterm
  • Start your app in a tab : sudo startxiwi -n xenial -T xterm

NOTE: You can add the '-b' option to any of the above commands to run in the background.

Hope this helps,

Hi,
I guess I had the misfortune to update CromeOS today and encounter this issue. I was able to work around it by copying /etc/crouton/xorg-intel-sna.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and modify set "TearFree" to false. This at least allows me to launch the chroot.

I feel as though my eyes will start to bleed at some point, the phantom lines and artifacts on screen are pretty bad. Any ideas if there might be a better workaround for this issue (other than using xiwi)?

Cheers,
Piers

ya I finally figured out what to do thanks to Dennis if anybody wants all you have to do is change Xorg to xiwi
this will change it back to xorg
sudo sh crouton -t xorg,xiwi -u -n chrootname
and this will change it this xiwi
sudo crouton -t xiwi -u -n chrootname
then wait for it to change then do
sudo startxfce4

tranks yall
peace yall
el shmoobo

I have found editing /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-crouton.conf:

    Option     "AccelMethod" "uxa"
-   Option     "AccelMethod" "sna"
+#   Option     "AccelMethod" "sna"

allows crouton Xorg to start. I don't understand the difference, but think uxa is probably less good than sna because playing video in 'mplayer' or 'vlc' doesn't work any more. Playing video in Chrome-under-Crouton still works.
