Please describe your issue:

During install:
sudo install -Dt /usr/local/bin -m 755 ~/Downloads/crouton

If known, describe the steps to reproduce the issue:

xiwi blender&

fails - maybe related to the core dump issue?

Tried reinstalling crouton, tried updating sid, tried removing xorg from the target.

Any other suggestions?!

yeah, I gave up with crouton and went for chrx instead. There's no chance
of getting a graphics tablet working under crouton and it works out of the
box with chrx.

I don’t have a graphics tablet and have been happily using crouton for about 2 years

Same here. Crouton is great until you need some hardware support via a
kernel module. Then you're stuck.

Crouton also seems to have gone very quiet recently...

For me it broke as soon as I upgrade chromebook to version 77.Nothing else changed.
this also breaks the crouton extension which never comes up which in turn breaks any X-based apps.

ok got this all working.
So the culprit of xiwi not working is the crouton extension.
Do the following.
1>Remove the existing crouton integration extension from chrome.
2>Reinstall it from https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/crouton-integration/gcpneefbbnfalgjniomfjknbcgkbijom
3>Retry xiwi or any other x-windows operation it will work fine.

yes, I found I had to disable and re-enable the extension. It stops working
after a while - after a reboot?

Yes you are right .after reboot it stopped working for me as well .

I am still getting this after I've removed and reinstalled the crouton integration extension and rebooted my machine. I've also deleted my chroots and attempted to reinstall a target.

Yeah, think it's something to do with Chrome's updates locking down parts of the kernel or filesystem or something. Reinstalling / deleting chroots won't help.

@biscuitlad I am trying chrx as you suggested above.

For myself on a Chromebook Pixel 2015 it's been great, very well supported.

Few annoyances for GalliumOS, such as no docs, resolution of login screen,
etc. It would be nice to be able to switch from the Pixel screen to my 4K
monitor with a script, but all of that is of minor importance.

The main thing is that my graphics tablet works for krita and blender!
Sadly it'll never work under crouton because of the Pixel's ancient kernel

  • I couldn't find the right headers to compile the modules. chrx just
worked out of the box once you burn the firmware from Mr Chromebook. Been
    very good so far.

I didn't manage to boot GalliumOS through chrx. Used the Chrome recovery utility to delete the partition and I will return back to Crostini.

For me the following works 90% of the time.
Click on the big C icon on the right hand top corner.Right click on the C icon for Crouton integration.
Click on Manage extensions.Disable extension.wait a few seconds.Reenable it.Start your xiwi apps etc.Rinse/repeat as required.

For me I have to use the disable and then enable button within the crouton helper extension after reboots but other than that it works but does come up with this warning every time I run start-gnome or enter-chroot

latest upgrade to version 78 fixes the issue where in crouton extension had to be disabled/enabled periodically.xiwi works reliably hand in hand with the crouton extension.

I have neither the extension installed as a target or in the Chrome browser.

crouton: version 1-20190902190258~master:9a594a66
sudo crouton -r sid -t cli-extra
....
$ sudo startcli
Entering /mnt/stateful_partition/crouton/chroots/sid...
WARNING: Unable to register core dump handler

Is this a Chrome OS update issue? Are we talking about two different things?

[Edit]
Moved to the Chrome OS beta channel and still the same issue.

I'm also having this issue, alongside all my applications being incredibly slow all of a sudden.

i am also having this issue. nothing to do with x dont even have it installed i type startcli and i get that error.

My guess is that Google have added a kernel module to prevent Crouton from working on fairly new Chromebooks. But it is only a guess.

?? What purpose would that serve? I'm confused.
