another one i found is as follows

Hopefully, that was just a temporary glitch.

Your installation didn't finish, try to update it with: sudo sh ~/Downloads/crouton -u
I that doesn't work I would delete it and install a chroot with the 'trusty' release.

Easy as 1, 2 -

1. sudo delete-chroot precise
2. sudo sh ~/Downloads/crouton -r trusty -t xfce,extension

Sorry, but going over all of the outputs above it looks like you still have a 'precise' chroot and now a 'trusty' chroot and both are unfinished and possibly borked. I should have paid closer attention to your outputs earlier to catch some of those problems.

Looking at your latest output above, your 'trusty' chroot isn't complete and the release doesn't seem to match 'trusty'. The release numbers you tried aren't valid either so it didn't help the situation.

Here's what I would do now if I were you -

1. _reboot_
2. sudo delete-chroot precise (_make sure there are no errors and it completes successfully_)
3. sudo delete-chroot trusty (_make sure there are no errors and it completes successfully_)
4. sudo sh ~/Downloads/crouton -r trusty -t xfce,extension (_make sure there are no errors and it completes successfully_)

_If at any point you get errors_, _stop_ and show us the output here before you go on so we can help fix it before things get worse.
EDIT: _Also show us the output of sudo edit-chroot -all_

According to its description, the extension target provides -

• 'Clipboard synchronization and URL handling with Chromium OS.'

So you use it to cut-n-paste to/from your chroot(s) and CrOS along with handy things like Chromium OS URL handling, notifications, and clipboard synchronization to crouton.

It's especially handy and required with the 'xiwi' xmethod along with the 'crouton integration' extension that allows you to launch your desktop in a window, full-screen, or in a tab.
