I'm reaching out to the Microsoft Linux repo admins (filing ticket, emailing).

This is reported for 18.04 and 19.10 as well. The Microsoft Linux repo admins did some maintenance around the time of the first report, so this may be related.

Is .NET Core not recommended for production workloads?

We're aware these outages have significant impact on a lot of people, and do our best to make sure issues are being resolved. We support installing from the Microsoft Linux repos, and it's a good way to keep a machine up to date on .NET Core since it works with ordinary apt upgrade/yum update/etc.

I will mention, though, there are other ways to get .NET Core that might be a better fit depending on how you run .NET Core in production. See linux-setup.md, or you might also be interested in the .NET Core Docker images.

My mssql odbc driver on Databricks Cluster (Ubuntu 16.04) is working fine till last night. This morning I started my cluster again to see it can no longer be installed. I found that there was an updated last night to the repository link. I'm not sure if my issue also falls under the same category. but below's my log.

This happens to 16.04 too (I guess for other the same). It is quite unpleasant, since it breaks any provisionings requiring dotnet repository as a dependency.

As has already been pointed out, Microsoft's APT repositories have been broken multiple times before and this has a large impact on many people. It's not only people trying to install .NET Core, either, but anyone running apt update as part of a script that does other things - which may be completely unrelated - is affected. I don't want to entirely ignore errors from apt update, but it doesn't provide a way to ignore errors for Microsoft's repositories only.

Does Microsoft not have any automated tests or monitoring at all for this stuff?

Same as I stated for Ubuntu a few posts above. It looks like someone replaced the wrong file. Perhaps a VSCode intern with a too long leash?

It doesn't FIX the problem - it removes .net core and other Microsoft techologies from the update management, leaving you with a stale system (or even an inconsistent one if some packages dependant on .NET get updated without the Microsoft tech being updated).

Microsoft NEEDS to address this - it's not the first time (see similar issue from -Aug- Apr 21.)

My mssql odbc driver on Databricks Cluster (Ubuntu 16.04) is working fine till last night. This morning I started my cluster again to see it can no longer be installed. I found that there was an updated last night to the repository link. I'm not sure if my issue also falls under the same category. but below's my log.

Exactly the same thing is happening to us. Can't install the package with the exact same hash error. But then again the problem is the repository...

Yeah, I'm on debian 10 and trying to do a fresh install and getting the same problem.

In my case since it is a fresh install leaving it stale is not a work around. I literally can't do what I'm needing to do until I can install dotnet core sdk.

@CrossBound As an alternative, you can manually download the various packages with wget and install them using dpkg, e.g.

wget https://packages.microsoft.com/repos/microsoft-ubuntu-bionic-prod/pool/main/d/dotnet-sdk-3.1/dotnet-sdk-3.1.100-x64.deb
dpkg -i dotnet-sdk-3.1/dotnet-sdk-3.1.100-x64.deb

You'd need to do that for the various packages (runtime, runtime-deps, hostfx,...), but it should at least unblock you.

Looking forward to the day Debian/Ubuntu natively ship a version of .NET Core 😄 .

I just got an update from the Linux repo admins that they've reverted the recent service changes that caused this problem in the first place, and they're now working on fixing up the individual repos so that they're available again.

Good to hear that it's starting to work! The repo admins report that the metadata should be fixed for all the feeds we've seen affected by this. I'm also getting success on my machine for Ubuntu 19.04 and Debian 9. I'm in contact directly with one of the devs who is working on Debian 10 now, and they'll then refresh all the Debian package feeds to make sure none are missed.

@Remorc a few possibilities come to mind:

Did you apply a sudo rm -f ... workaround linked earlier in the thread? This actually removes the Microsoft feed altogether, so apt-get update may succeed but the install will then fail because your client doesn't know about the feed anymore. The "Troubleshoot the package manager" steps on the repo install page should help you get set back up: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/core/install/linux-package-manager-ubuntu-1904. (Make sure to select your distro at the top of the page.)
Are you trying to install on a non-x64 device? The repo only has packages for x86-64 at the moment, so you need to install a different way to get .NET Core for other architectures. (https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet-core/3.1)

If that doesn't help, please file a new issue so we can properly look into it, and please include the apt update logs if you can. Thanks!

A few things I'm interested in are the the goal of the script, and which error message(s) seem like a problem on our end.
