Core: Ubuntu dotnet install fails with "File has unexpected size"

Problem encountered on https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/linux-package-manager/ubuntu18-04/sdk-current
Operating System: Linux Ubuntu 18.04 - x64

There is something unhappy about the supplied packages-microsoft-prod.deb. I'm sure it was working a few hours ago. I can reproduce it in a docker container. Maybe I just need to wait for a CDN somewhere to update.

This was reported over at https://github.com/dotnet/core-setup/issues/7778 as well, and I see it on my machine too. Not closing the issue though--I think it will useful to have this issue active as a signpost for others hitting it until we can get in contact with the repo admins to fix it. /cc @leecow

My reluctant workaround for my DockerFile is going to Ubuntu 19.04 , which means:

I appreciate this is not really relevant/applicable to most/all, but got me out of a hole.

Fine, problems occur, but, if they're this critical, surely someone should have a 'runbook' of sorts for this kind of thing?

Workaround:

Manually download the binary https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet-core/3.0
ASP.NET Core Binaries: x64 on Ubuntu 18.04 in my case.

Copy the content into a folder on your machine, I use /home/dotnet
then run:

sudo cp -a ./dotnet/. /usr/share/dotnet/
sudo chmod +x /usr/share/dotnet/
sudo ln -s /usr/share/dotnet/dotnet /usr/bin/dotnet
sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/dotnet

dotnet --info

It was not possible to find any installed .NET Core SDKs

The only workaround for now is to use the 19.04 ubuntu repo :

sudo dpkg -i packages-microsoft-prod.deb
sudo apt-get install apt-transport-https
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install dotnet-sdk-2.2

And you can change the version 2.2 by your version

Any idea when they are going to fix this. Changing to 19.04 on a whim is not just so easy a prospect in every project. I've got a base docker container half a mile deep with installed dependencies that im trying to add dotnet core to for running unit tests on my project.

I sent the repo admins a high-pri mail about this issue, we will hopefully have more info soon.

About pointing an 18.04 distro at the the 19.04 Microsoft repository as a workaround: we publish the same Debian packages to the 18.04 and 19.04 repositories because the dependencies are flexible, so this workaround should still get you a working .NET Core until this is fixed.

The current outage is being tracked at https://github.com/dotnet/core/issues/3988.

I'm going to lock this thread as resolved: I encourage everyone seeing this in the future to file new issues rather than add comments to this one. Because the issue is closed, new comments might not be seen by the right people in the future. A new issue is more likely to get noticed. There's nothing wrong with posting relevant comments to old issues, but I want to make sure outages are seen as soon as possible. Thanks!
