Steps to reproduce

A month ago, install ownCloud 8.2.2 on Debian Jessie
Today, upgrade from 8.2.2 to 9.0.0
See an exception in the upgrade log

Expected behaviour

no exceptions

Actual behaviour

an exception was thrown

Operating system: Debian Jessie

Web server: Apache 2.4.17-1

Database: MariaDB 10.0.23-0+deb8u1

PHP version: 5.6.17+dfsg-0+deb8u1

ownCloud version: 9.0.0

I could solve this by overriding the php-command like so:
php5 occ upgrade

This forces the command line to execute occ using php5, resulting in an successful upgrade.

@Pastafarianist did you have the calendar app enabled in the past ? Did you use it ?

The errors in the log looks like they're related to calendar entries (possibly old)

I had the same problem concerning what you've cited above: _"exception 'Doctrine\DBAL\DBALException' with message 'Failed to connect to the database: An exception occured in driver: could not find driver' in /var/www/owncloud/lib/private/db/connection.php:54"_

I solved it. The problem (in my case) was caused by different php version for 'the command line' and for the serving side via 'apache'. occ needs to use the same php version.

check the php version at the command line 'php -v' for example PHP7.0.2
check the php version which the serving-side is using via e.g. creating a info.php with the content: " // Show all information, defaults to INFO_ALL
phpinfo();
?>"
this gives as output e.g. PHP 5.6.17

So the difference is PHP7.0.2 and PHP5.6.17. Btw the occ command is php based also.

I solved the problem by installing PHP5.6.17 at the 'command line' side as well so it is the same as at 'serving side'.

But we're not there yet in case you have multiple php versions on your system. If the 'php -v' doesn't give PHP5.6.17 you have to create a new alias for php (assuming the correct version is also stored in the file system, otherwise install it). Locate the correct php version with 'whereis php'. Change the alias to the correct path until the 'php -v' gives the same version as the 'serving side' php version.

That's it. Your occ command should work again if it was caused by the same problem. If not, please remove my reply.

You did an upgrade to the MySQL PHP extension at the same time, notice this just before ownCloud gets upgraded:

They then get re-enabled later, but after ownCloud needs to do its upgrade. You can just re-run the upgrade by disabling maintenance mode, nothing has been updated yet since the database wasn't accessible during the first attempt.

@jnweiger Is there any way we can prevent these issues? I think I've seen a couple of bug reports on this now, that a system upgrade where PHP and/or necessary PHP extensions are updated at the same time as ownCloud cause problems when the package tries to perform the upgrade.

While upgrading to owncloud 9 php7 was also upgrade from php5 at the same time on my server. This causes the same problem as described above and i could solve it by uninstalling php5 and all its modules and installing all needed php7 modules like php-mysql php-pgsql php-zip and a lot more.

NB : on a fresh install I've got the issue on php occ, no matter what [insert offensive adjective here] php.ini I use.

This has been crippling for me for a quite long time and has prevented me to upgrade my instance.
