Sites such as YouTube contain metadata in various forms: oEmbed, OpenGraph, etc.
Consider supporting some of these metadata formats. It'd be great if a pasted YouTube link displayed the page title and thumbnail, similar to .jpg/.png links.
For privacy, this could be on a set of whitelisted domains -- because the only way to discover whether a link has oEmbed/OpenGraph requires fetching the link. This set of domains could be editable as an expert option.

Rather than white list I would prefer "Show preview" button, which would load the referenced page and interpret metadata.
I'm not sure whether Conversations shows thumbnail of linked pictures. I would consider it the same feature. Privacy concerns are a big issue here, as well as security.
Automatic fetching and preview generation could be enabled only for contacts just like it is only enabled for contacts for image uploads. And for non-contacts, a preview button could be shown.
