Concrete5: Renaming "Custom Template" to "Block Template"?

Created on 8 May 2019  路  6Comments  路  Source: concrete5/concrete5

My colleague, Usami, had this suggestion to rename "Custom Template" to "Block Template"

If it's "custom templates", the beginner won't know which template they are talking about.
So renaming to "Block Template" make more sense.

I thought it was very interesting idea. And I have never acorss my mind because I'm sooo used to think "custom template" to be custom template.

And it will be troublesome to dig all the commends, translations and documentations. (moreover, we published two books in Japanese which cannot be corrected).

So I myself understand that it is very hard to change.

But it's good to throw an idea.

Thx.

Whilst I think 'Block Template' is a better description to describe a template in places like documentation, in the context of the pop up menu that you see when you click on a block I think it's fine - it's also highlighting the block at the time, so it's giving some visual context as to where the custom template would apply.

A related thought I constantly have is that I'd love for Custom Templates to not be buried within the Advanced section behind the cog icon. It's something we use all the time, while the other options within that section are really just for tweaks, etc. And changing custom block templates is one of the most powerful things you can do with blocks. So I've often felt it should be a top level popup menu item itself, or directly shown on the toolbar of options like this:

How about just "Template"? At least in the UI. In documentation it could be "Block Template" for specifying which template.

I've also had trouble explaining to customers what is a "custom" template. I believe "template" would be more self explanatory. The word "block" doesn't really translate that well to my language in its technical context in c5. Most commonly we just translate it to "content types" in the documentation.

Further to my comment, thinking about the menu it's kind of weird having 'Design & Custom Template' as the menu item, suggesting there are two main things to do within, but then hiding Custom Template within the advanced section...

I don't really care for the word 'template'. I'd prefer something like 'Alternate View' or 'Display Options' or 'Alternate Design'... something in plain language. 'Template' doesn't mean much to regular folks.

I like the idea of renaming Custom Templates as Block Templates; and not having them buried in the advanced tab makes sense as well.

Adding labels 鈥撀爐his makes sense to me.
