I receive pywintypes.error: (232, 'WriteFile', 'The pipe is being closed.') when trying to build a container on Windows.

@shin- yes, with docker build it works. After succesfull build docker-compose up works fine.

Odd. What does your Dockerfile look like? Does it work if you upgrade docker-compose to 1.11.2?

@prochnowc I just stumbled on the same error; my issue - and I'm not saying it's the cause of yours! - was that I hadn't correctly set up the docker environment. In other words, I was using cmd.exe but had forgotten to run the output of:

docker-machine env default --shell cmd

Maybe that'll help? Or at least give a clue...

@shin- I found the problem: It was caused by some file in the build context which had unicode characters in its name.

Maybe title of the issue should be changed.

Be careful, if you are using docker on windows, docker-compose does not work in "Windows container mode" and raise the same error.

To use "linux containers" : Right click on docker icon → click on "switch to Linux containers"

I cannot get past this error. I've used docker for windows, docker installed via pip, and docker installed via bash, for ubuntu.

I'm using Babun, a fork of cygwin. I initially believed the issue was due to UTF-8 characters, as ConEmu was throwing errors based around that. However even Powershell, a native windows shell, fails to build. I'd be happy to provide any info to anyone willing to help.

Currently using a Mac for my daily driver, however I'd much rather use this windows machine if I can resolve this issue.

Was running docker-compose up -d in PHP storm terminal. Running through CMD admin mode works.

Using docker-compose in Git Bash I had the same problem.
Windows restarted and Docker for Windows app was closed.
I just had to start Docker for Windows app and it worked again.

I had this issue. @AgoFig helped me figure it out.

Turns out I was not running the Docker for Windows app. I had accidentally removed it from my start-up.

I'm on Windows 10, running Docker 17.12 Up until the last Docker update, I was doing just fine in running docker-compose up -d in Visual Studio Code (terminal). But now it gives me the same errors reported on this post.

But! If I open the windows folder location of my docker project through GIT Bash, and process docker-compose up -d, then 'docker-compose' works as it should. Perhaps there's in incompatibility between the latest version of VSCode terminal and the latest version of Docker?

The same problem, the execution is interrupted at any time. PhpStorm -> Terminal.

I can reproduce the same error as @blachawk - The docker-compose up command works perfectly in a regular PowerShell window, soon as I try from PowerShell inside VS Code I get the error - "IOError Failed to execute script docker-compose"

In my launch settings for VS Code, I added this: "console": "externalTerminal", This makes the debug process build (compose) using the external terminal and thus works again. Looks like a VS Code issue?

Long shot; is anyone with the problem using something like clink to modify their cmd.exe?

I had remarkably similar issues recently where running a command (Tortoise's SubWCRev) as a Pre-build Event in Visual Studio 2015 was failing. The command worked fine when running inside cmd.exe (_with_ clink) and seemingly worked on other team members machines from within VS. Removing clink turned out to be the solution. Appeared to be a permissions issue.

The diagnostic information discussed in Brian's answer in this Stack Overflow question helped identify the cause. Maybe it'll help shed some light for you folks too?
