Client: OS X desktop crashes out of the blue when working in the background

Expected behaviour

The app shouldn't crash ;).

Actual behaviour

The app was running in the background when it suddenly crashed and crash notification window appeared.

This happens seemingly on random - sometimes the app will crash, sometimes it won't. At the time of this particular crash, nothing was being synced.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Start the app.
  2. Wait for the crash to happen sometime later.

Client configuration

Client version: 2.5.1 (build 10818)

Operating system: OS X 10.13.6 (Happens on two machines - rMBP 2018 and iMac Retina 2017).

OS language: English

Qt version used by client package (Linux only, see also Settings dialog): N/A

Client package (From ownCloud or distro) (Linux only): N/A

Installation path of client: /Applications/ownCloud.app

I'm doing random other things in other directories, but no changes in anything that's being synced by ownCloud.

I've never seen this until today, after I updated to 2.5.1 it happened several times now in a couple of hours.

Thank you for the reports. Unfortunately the crash reports don't contain useful backtraces so this is still a mystery issue. This backtrace in this ticket might be a good starting point for investigation: https://github.com/owncloud/client/issues/6930

If you can, try running the client in a debugger and get a backtrace when the crash happens. That would be enormously helpful for addressing the problem. Currently we have little idea about what's causing it.

@mattcan @sawh @wheirman @tomekwojcik Please also watch the memory usage "before" the crash (which is hard of course. so you'd check it each hour and note it down and then when it crashes you take the last value you wrote down).

If you can, try running the client in a debugger and get a backtrace when the crash happens. That would be enormously helpful for addressing the problem. Currently we have little idea about what's causing it.

I'd like to do this for you, but I'm not sure how to run the app in a debugger. If you have a link to a tutorial on how to do that I'd be happy to help out. I've got a team of 5 all working with Owncloud daily and each one is having a minimum of 1 crash a day at this point, including me. If there is anything I can do to help nail this down I'd love to, but I'm not a developer, so I'll need some assistance getting you that backtrace.

This has started in the past month or two, and was happening before I updated to Mojave as well.

Currently, v2.5.1 (build 10818) crashes regularly on several Macs (had the case on Mac Pros, MacBook Pros and Mac minis) running under Mac OS El Capitan 10.11.6, macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 and macOS Mojave 10.14.2.

We've been having these crashes since the update to client version 2.5.0.

Very annoying, mostly because the crashes seem 'random' to the end-users, i.e. the desktop client display the crash report window even when sitting idle (no sync occurring at the time of the crash).

The temporary "solution / fix" has been to revert to the previous 2.4.x series desktop client.

On the other hand, the 2.5.x series client on Windows machines seems to be working fine.

@samekh93 Thank you for the offer, I might get back to you on that. For now we've improved crash dumping to get us symbols and have a backtrace to work with.

@guruz Could you point to an OSX build we can give to people that has these crash reporting upgrades? Maybe there's more than one useful backtrace to be had.

I'm currently running RC2, and no crashes as yet (touch wood).

I have noticed, compared to the last release, memory usage is much higher.

When reviewing memory usage before, it ranged from 36.3MB through to 40.4MB (was the highest I saw before it crashed again).

Using RC2, it's running at around 64MB, so quite an increase compared to 2.5.1, and it's currently not doing anything (no syncing).

I'll keep an eye on it throughout the day.

Update, 5:36pm: No crashes today (yet), memory usage is currently at 65.1MB.

Update, 21 Jan 3:38pm: Still no crashes (yet), memory usage is currently 65.8MB. Syncs have been behaving correctly throughout the day.

tested 252rc2 on macos 10.13.6 and 10.14

manual torture test with 3700 files syncing up and down.
and also doing other things, with the client open in background. no crashes seen -> GOOD

I've been running RC2 since Friday, and not a single crash (so far).

I've had to reboot once - prior to reboot, memory usage was higher (65-ish), but after a reboot, it's down towards 35-40ish.

But no crashes.

Hello, Just to let you know that I also have some random similar "background" crash since around two-three weeks, specially after updating to the client 2.5.1 (build 10818).
OSX ElCapitain 10.11.4
Mac Pro 3,1 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
(I know it's quite old hardware). Did not try RC2 yet...

Hi y'all, I've been testing 2.5.2rc2 for about a week now and no random crashes have been occurring since. Tested on OSX 10.11.6, macOS 10.13.6 and 10.14.3. Thanks !

@Zenoria The 2.5.4 daily builds have several crashes fixed, including one which happened on Windows.
