When you receive a message without open Keybase you don't get any sound alert or notification, so, you can have many messages and don't notice it at all.
I'm getting this as well on Windows 10. The icon changes from monochrome to color when you get a notification, but there's no sound or obvious visual alert, so you have to look at the icon every so often.
And people get the same on macOS https://github.com/keybase/client/issues/9215
This makes conversations difficult because you keep missing messages if you happen to be multitasking. Is it actually a bug or a feature?
This is a longstanding bug on Windows, we're working on it but it seems intermittent and therefore hard to diagnose.
Great to hear from the team ;)
On my end, I have Keybase installed on 3 different machines and none ever play any notification sound, so I'm kinda surprised to hear it's intermittent ;) That being said, is there any way we can help you identify the source of the issue?
It seems notifications came and went with various Win10 creator editions, but it looks like we can fix it:

Ack! That sounds like such a mess! But thanks for looking into it and good luck! I'll be looking forward to see the notifications return eventually in some future version :)
I have notifications again on Windows 10 version 1709, build 16299, using this Keybase installer. If someone else with missing notifications could try it, we'd appreciate the feedback. As a bonus, this should also bring notifications to windows 8/8.1, if someone is using that.
I had installed that version but i think that since, Keybase self-updated (?). Anyway I'm running 1.0.47-20180404145203+0fe66b9 right now. I do have popups, but no sound. That's still a huge improvement, so thanks for that!
Ideally we should be able to choose audio and/or visual notification; in some contexts it's probably best not to have conversations appear on screen even if Keybase is minimised ;)
Please add some sound notifications it's really important to avoid missing messages, also a buzzing sound like old msn, because it's necesary to wake people up.
