In expo mode, the workspaces are arranged linearly, which becomes awkward when many workspaces are present. It should be presented in grids (e.g. 2x2 grid of workspaces) instead of a line
We want to keep everything in line to make it really clear workspaces are going left to right and be consistent across the desktop with this approach.
FWIW, I'd really like to see this too. The linear workspaces are currently my primary complaint for Cinnamon. Please don't take the "we think it should work this way and you'll like it" attitude. Thanks.
Agreed with @awilliam.
Why not set a default option whilst letting the user be able to change it the way he/she prefers ?
Joining the group that want to see this feature. I still haven't upgraded my mac from snow leopard because they switched to linear workspaces in lion... Sure make linear the default, that's fine, just give me a way to change it... even if I have to edit configs by hand...
Yea… grid workspaces are keeping me from switching from mate to cinnamon
I've touched on this before on the cinnamon "homepage" but just to have it here on GitHub...
This is also a make or break functionality for me unfortunately. The handling and switching between workspaces in Gnome2 (cinnamon states that it goes by Gnome's2 traditional layout) and now of course MATE is superior to anything I have used. Snow Leopard did it fairly and XFCE does it alright but it still isn't as good as Gnome2.
If you could just consider adding this as an extra functionality (not the default one) I would be really happy!
The things that make Gnome2 workspaces so good, for me at least, is the possibility of a grid of course and that if you are for example in the top left workspace you cannot "go left" but only right and down. (I'm basing this on a 2x2 grid.)
Good to know that mate supports this. I will switch to it. Grid workspaces is a must have for my work.
Boo!!!! This is the #1 reason I kicked Gnome 3 to the curb. It looks like Cinnamon will be joining it unless you can make the desktops fit into a grid.
Let me add myself to the list of users who have not switched to Cinnamon & Linux Mint for this very reason (no workspace grid). I appreciate everything the Mint and Cinnamon teams have done to combat the mistakes of the Gnome project. Keep up the good work and please consider this request.
For those who are interested, an applet now exists to provide a 2D workspace grid for Cinnamon.

Find it strange that it should require a custom applet to get a workspace grid. Add me to the list of people who would appreciate this feature to be considered for future versions. Anyway the applet does a very "hackish" job and isn't what I'd call a proper solution to the problem (requires applet to be in the panel at all times).
Well even if there's now a solution for this,... why not put the same in the default workspace applet?
I mean things shouldn't really clutter up that much, that there are different applets for more or less the same things.
What I want to see from a workspace switcher applet is basically the following:
I'm partial to the linear workspaces, however I would like the flexibility of I change my mind. (This will never be Apple OS or Ubuntu after all, so removing options in not the primary objective)
This shortcoming is one of the top reasons my colleagues don't use mint.
Glad there is a solution to the workspace grid. This is a must. I echo the above comments: absolutely will not use a DE without a grid.
This has really be driving me nuts! So much so that I had to stop using Mint. Any plans to get this out any time soon?
You realize you're posting in a very old and closed issue? There are no plans to implement this.
It is not perfect but I wrote an applet to provide this feature.
