Cataclysm-dda: Be able to craft more than 20 items at once.

Describe the solution you'd like

Maybe be able to craft up to 100 items at once would be better.

I feel limited when i need to go to the crafting menu multiple times and press "b" and it only goes up to 20. Make it up to 100 and the problem would be solved.

What item it is that you need 100 of in a batch? Remember that to batch craft, you need a) the resources and b) time (which indirectly implies food, water, and no enemies nearby).

Not exactly 100, but like i have a steel jerrican of clean water. And it holds up 70 liters, and when i want to clean all of it i need to choose the craft option multiple times. And also we can pause the craft.

People might die while crafting and stuff.

Well, thats life. You shouldn't try to craft 50 arrows while you are not in a safe place, people would use this large crafting number while they are home.

Zireael, you don't have to finish crafts in one go. Stop, drink and eat, rest then resume crafting.

As for why one would want more than 20x batch crafting... It depends on the craft. Take biodiesel for example. 99% batch crafting time saving after like 10.

Better that you get an option to batch craft amounts of items. That way you could craft 1000 units of biodiesel if you wanted to. 300 lamp oil.

Oh, that must be new then - last I played, dying during batch crafting due to hunger/thirst was an issue.

Yeah. And if you examine a crafting table, you'll find an option, Craft long as possible. That option lets you to repeat batch crafts over and over until your character gets too thirsty, hungry or tired to push on.

Awesome as it is, you're still not taking 100% advantage of the batch crafting time savings. It would be nice if you could select an item, push b then type in a number you want.

Like, want to craft 1000 boxers?

Select boxers in crafting screen, b, 1000, enter annnnddd, there! Days later, it's finished!

Drawback to doing it that way? The in-progress crafting item will be too big to put onto a workbench, a table, etc. No extra crafting speed for you if you go crazy!

Might even break the game if the volume become too big for it to even be placed onto the ground. Hardcode the limit to what you can craft at once... Maybe hardcode the volume limit of in-progress crafting. Hmm.

I like the idea. Showing a number for the maximum amount of items you can create in one batch with one set of ingredients would save the user time,

A difficult but even better system may be a batch craft that can use multiple sets of ingredients instead of just one set.

The primary blocker for this kind of thing is tracking the capacities of
various tools used in the recipe in order to determine maximum batch size.
For example if you're making soup in a 5L pot you obviously can't batch
more than 5L of soup at a time.

while you can still batch 20x0,25 l -> 5 l of clean water in one small open tin can.
And you can still carry this water unfinished in your hands to another destination.
In other words, it already can be exploited to hell, so let us have non limiting batch craft, for QoL sake.

No, I'd still expect to be able to make 200L of boiled water with a 5L pot. But, I would expect the batch crafting bonus to cap to how many instances of the recipe the tool can handle at once. So you'll be naturally slowed down by your limited tools, but the game wouldn't punish you for only having a can by adding more keystrokes.

To be clear, the thought is there's nothing preventing you from making 200L of soup with a 5L pot, by cooking 5L of soup 40x over, but its not gonna be as fast as making an entire aluminium keg of soup at once.
