What you were trying to do (and why)
Run brew update, like I always have in the past.
What happened (include command output)
Running brew update can result in hundreds of lines of metadata being printed to the console. I'm not sure why this started to happen.
What you expected to happen
When I used to run brew update in the past, I got minimal output in the terminal listing only the names of the Formulae that had been updated.

I have figured out what was causing the issue: I installed the node@6 package because I didn't want to use the latest version. The output of brew info node@6 is this:

Somehow when either upgrading to npm version 5 or globally installing @angular/[email protected] an executable named touch was installed into the /usr/local/opt/node@6/bin folder, therefor taking precedence over the normal touch command. This alternative touch was printing the extra lines of stats.

You typed brew upgrade. It seems extremely likely this is a local Git setting you've configured. Try to move/edit your .gitconfigs.

UPDATE: deleting my global .gitconfig has no effect, this still persists. Just so I know where to begin my hunt for an answer, what makes you say that this is likely a git issue?

UPDATE2: My apologies, I don't know what I've done, but this is definitely not related to homebrew. I seem to be getting Stats printed for commands in both bash and zsh. I realised this after getting these bogus stats running the touch command.

I have figured out what was causing the issue: I installed the node@6 package because I didn't want to use the latest version. The output of brew info node@6 is this:
