Betonquest: [Idea] Place to share quests

Created on 29 Sep 2017  路  18Comments  路  Source: BetonQuest/BetonQuest

Hi guys

Because this plugin is awesome, it could be great to have a place to share community quests. What do you think about? Are some people interested?

You can just use your own GitHub repo to store your quests. Adding a Wikipage to this project where people can link their repos is trivial then.
If it turns out that this is used by a lot of people the solution can be improved later on using one of the more sophisticated solutions.

Last time I checked nobody was interested in sharing quests from their server. It was quite a long time ago though, so I guess we can try again.

Do you have any platform in mind?

i would love to share my quests! however i work on an italian server so they will likely be in italian.

Platform really depends on how much is needed... I can imagine anything from just a list of links to quest files to a real platform with accounts, quest "projects", descriptions of these quests, the option to help translating quests and collaborating on new ones.

The platform similar to SpigotMC would be nice, but I think it's an overkill. Too much trouble for something that probably won't even be used that much. A simple list of links on the other hand is too "manual", I don't think it would work. Not with me dissapearing for a month every now and then.

Unfortunatelly I don't know of any existing web app to satisfy our needs and I won't be developing one myself now. Unless maybe when I start learing Rust - that could be a good training project.

Also I think it would be nice to be able to share two things:

  • BQ files (to share entire quests)
  • quest scenarios (to share ideas)

Sounds keen, I'm in~

I can't edit my previous comment by phone, damn. By the way: how about discord? A lot of famous plugins like MythicMobs and Denizen are currently using this platform and I'd be glad to have BQ in my channels list. Also, I've been developing quite an experience on Beton Quest, being the storyboarder and "quester" of my project, having like 70 different quests on my server (and it keeps escalating :D ) and a small contributor, as a developer of mine is adding a few unofficial features in the plugin. So if you need any helper on discord, I'd be happy to serve. Moreover, our quests are multilingual (Italian and English), as my girlfriend studies english at the university, thus I shouldn't provide grammatically wrong quests :) (also, I can speak Spanish and Japanese to help a wider slice of users :D)

Discord is nice for chitchat, support and maybe announcements. but I wouldn't say it is suited to share quests, whole packages etc. These need to be stored in an archive of some sort, maybe something remotely similar to GitHub. But I don't want to only see the new posted quests all the time, and if I wanted to see older ones, I'd have to scroll waaay up. The quests would probably also need to be zipped and then downloaded and unzipped to view.

Well, Mythic Mobs started with a forum, but it'd be too much doing the same for BetonQuest.. on the other hand, discord doesn't require any effort. Moreover, people should also LEARN how to develop a quest, not just DOWNLOAD them and whatever. So, like, a showcase channel

For learning how to write quests the wiki works well, and a support channel could improve that and ideas could be discussed there. But that is not exactly what this issue is about (at least to my understanding). It's specifically about sharing quests from your server, and people who view the quests might or might not just download them.
It's more for people who already know how to write quests and want to improve themselves and/or give and receive feedback and less a place for newcomers to start.

I guess we could launch a forum. There's a nice project here on GitHub called Flarum, I could install it on the dev server and we could see what comes out of it.

I don't know about discord. I mean it can be fine too, but I would rarely look there. For some reason I don't like using these types of apps.

Discourse has also been getting quite popular recently. It's Open Source as well, and free if you're self-hosting

Yes, but it's too heavy. You need at least 2GB of RAM to run it. It's great for large communities which can afford it and will benefit from its many features. We don't need that much.

This is a great idea.

Because I have encountered some problems while creating my quests and if we have a library of demo quests, it could be easier.

Such separate questhub-repo would be a simple but good working solution.

I have a betonquest discord with 50 members if you guys want to share quests. The link is here: https://discord.gg/MvmkHEu

The discord server of @CalebGitBritannia has become more and more popular and offers its own channel for sharing quests, which is also used frequently.
I therefore think that this is completely sufficient and that we do not need another solution.
Or how do you see that?

If there are no more replies in a few days I will close this issue...
