Bedrock: Decommission `/contribute/events/` page

Created on 12 Nov 2018  Â·  14Comments  Â·  Source: mozilla/bedrock

The "Events" link under About -> Contribute in the new navigation now points to https://events.mozilla.org and not /contribute/events/.

We should decide what we want to do with the old events page. Is there a good reason to keep it around, or should we retire it and redirect to the new events site?

Unless anyone has a good reason to keep these pages around, I'm going to propose them for decom.

@LucyeoH is the contribute/events page here serving any purpose today to your team, given that there's also now events.mozilla.org?

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/contribute/events/

We no longer link to this page in the main navigation for www.mozilla.org, and instead link to https://events.mozilla.org/. Unless there's a good reason to keep it around, I'd like to propose we decommission this contribute/events/ page, and redirect the URL to events/mozilla.org.

Thoughts?

Hey,

I don't mind what you do in the short-term, I think we'll need to revisit this conversation when the Community Portal launches in 2020.

The current events page is pulling from the Reps Portal (https://reps.mozilla.org/) which is still active (but will ultimately be merged into the Community Portal in early 2020).

Events.mozilla.org is connected to Splash which does not have many users and which will also (likely) be merged with the portal in early 2020.

I think neither delivers a particularly good experience for users right now but contribute/events is at least more active. Happy to chat more if it'd be helpful....

@LucyeoH thanks for the context. Currently the contribute/events page is one of the most outdated pages on the website in terms of branding (it uses an old legacy framework called sandstone). By the end of this year, we’re aiming to either remove or update these pages to a more modern system. That means either retiring this page, or investing in time and resources to update it (not in terms of content, just branding).

As you are the content owner for this page, it would be great to get a decision here on if this page is still needed between now and when the new community portal exists. Thanks

@alexgibson I do not think this page is needed right now, definitely not investing in an update. I'd recommend re-directing to the community portal when it launches.

@LucyeoH do we know when the community portal is due to launch? My aim is to have these legacy pages either retired or updated by the end of 2019.

The portal is due to launch end of 2019. I will have a more exact date by
end of quarter.

Great, thank you!

@LucyeoH any updates on a more exact launch date for the community portal, so we can retire this events page?

@Alexander Gibson launch should be week of Dec 20th. We're just doing QA now and getting it moved over to Moz WP Engine.

@LucyeoH Just checking in here, did the site launch? I can't seem to find a public URL in any of the links.

Hey @alexgibson thanks for checking in. We pushed the public launch to after the break to make sure devs would be online. The URL will be community.mozilla.org (currently password protected) our plan is to go public this week or next. I'll put an update here and ping you as soon as that happens.

@alexgibson https://community.mozilla.org/ is now live so you can redirect /events to https://community.mozilla.org/events/ when you're ready!!
