Azure-docs: Quickstart as demonstrated in "How to authenticate users of your apps with the Microsoft identity platform" does not exist

Created on 21 Jun 2020  Â·  9Comments  Â·  Source: MicrosoftDocs/azure-docs

This video demonstrates a Quickstart feature in AAD on the Azure portal, but this feature doesn't seem to actually exist.

In the video:

In my portal:

It's mentioned as the "Express" option here as well.

@reinux Thank you for your feedback . We will investigate and update the thread.

@reinux The Quickstart blade is available for every application on my side. It has changed since the time video was shot. It was shot on Feb 6. But Quickstarts are surely available .

Also it surely is the express option because if I select the SPA option from the above on my app registration I get the following options.

This sure is the quickstart method but I cant say why you are not getting that option on your side. Is this an existing app registration that you have or you have created a new application ? Could you please provide the steps or create a new app registration with same steps and post the screenshots. And if even in any newly created app registration you do not see quickstart option then there may be some issue which I am not able to understand and may require some deeper troubleshooting . Please try this and let us know the results and we will help you with alternate support options.

Thank you.

I've tried setting up two new tests, one in the US and one in Canada. Both seem to work fine and show Quickstart now.

  1. Creating a new AAD tenant:

  2. Registering an app:

However, returning to my original tenant and creating a new app registration, Quickstart doesn't appear:

Is there something in my first tenant that could be preventing Quickstart from showing up?

Ah - the tenant you're referring to as your original tenant is an Azure AD B2C tenant. Apps registrations in an Azure AD B2C tenant won't show the Quickstart menu item.

Does an AAD tenant _become_ a B2C tenant? Because I'm looking at it under the AAD blade and it's not showing up there either.

No. The Azure AD directory in your B2C tenant backs the Azure AD resources for your B2C tenant (users, app registrations, etc.), but a 'standard' Azure AD tenant and a B2C tenant currently exist as different entities with differing capabilities.

If you have your B2C tenant selected and you select _Active Directory_, you're still effectively in your "B2C tenant" and you'll see differences in the available features between that _Active Directory_ and the _Active Directory_ in a "regular" Active Directory tenant.

There are ongoing efforts bring parity between the two and make this less confusing (which, I admit, it is), but the Quickstarts feature as you see in a standard Active Directory tenant have not been brought over to B2C's _Active Directory_.

@nickgmicrosoft @JasSuri @yoelhor Please correct me if I've misstated any of the above. :wrench: We need a better explanation of this in the B2C docs, including a diagram. :wrench:

@reinux . Please let us know if the update provided helps. This is as by design currently and as marsh said above the efforts are on to bring both AAD and AAD b2c version experience on portal to parity . the quickstarts are samples on github and can also be accessed directly as per your need. the Azure AD developer Page lists all the links which can be used.

Thank you .

Hi @reinux, I'm going to move to close this one as there are no changes required in the identity platform documentation. I've noted this as a follow-up item for B2C. #please-close

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, please go ahead and close.

I've switched to IS4 for the time being. I'm still having a hard time wrapping my head around all the moving parts in AAD/B2C.

There are ongoing efforts bring parity between the two and make this less confusing

Thanks. Looking forward to it!
